And westerners, there are a wide variety of them. Any one specific?
If you insist on general overall response, yes, they are friendlier in general.
Yes, it is common practice for them to smile at others, even strangers, as a friendly greeting.
Here, noone smiles or greets you in any way... and if you do smile to a stranger here, they look at you like you've lost your mind!
I've tried it... got nothing but strange stares and faces like I'm nuts. :embrass: :cry::cry:

Well all depends what one is looking at....
Asian's traditionally follow more of a coconut culture
tough from outside really hard to break at first but when these are cracked we are really soft from within.
Westerner's are traditionally the other way round ..they have a clear line drawn for you at all times.

On a day to day basis, do I really care that a person really feels inside?
More than likely, this encounter is the first and last with this person, so, how do we break down all the barriers and it does not matter since we will not see the person again.
I do not believe this is a Asian Westerner problem, but rather different cultures.
obviously you've never been to new york...hahaha
it's probably a perception we get from films and tourists that they are friendlier. when you've spent thousands of dollars and enjoying yourself in a foreign land, of course you'll be smiling!
I agree about the new york part. I think New Yorkers are quite a frenly group of people... can't helped but smiling back and chatting with them in return.

yes. the Westerners I interact with on an almost daily basis over in Australia are more open to me smiling at them as a form of greeting/acknowledgment.
over here, try doing that and you'll get the stares from the other party with messages such as "what the f*** are you smiling at!" or "is that old perv trying to pick me up?" or "urh. you smiling at me? did I leave my fly open?" and the likes.

Don't think it is unhappiness.
