Potrait - My Dreamy Daughter

Been a while since I put anything up for criticism. Anyway, here goes nothing.

I setup a white background with a flash shot thru an umbrella from the top right corner. Reflector on the left and a flash with a DIY snoot pointed at the background.

Did some PP to remove the crease on the white sheet and warm up a little.

Need some some feedback on:

1. Posing technique
2. PP technique
3. Overall photography technique e.g. exposure, composition etc.
4. Any other tips


Focal length - 120mm
F no. - F7.1
Exposure time - 1/160s
ISO - 100

i noticed her slightly cropped off right elbow first

but imo, she posed well, but then the colour on her face is a slightly off.

I feel :

1) her right cheek got some "problem" (dont know how to describe), could it be that you use too much jpeg compression or healing brush caused it when you doing pp?

2) this kind of shot for kids can be brighter and softer looking and abit less warm than now.

3) her fingers, crosses too much (also dont know how to put it in words), if dont cross until all the fingers starts pointing better.

4) her hair all over the place on her left shoulder.

5) also prefer hair dont cover the forehead like that, not nice looking lay.

6) dont like the cloth dangerling on her right shoulder.

7) dont like the necklace also, abit like not here not there, want to show dont want to show like that.

8) the hair pin position abit not nice, suggest may be better if on her right, now its also abit not here not there.

a little too much headroom, should give more room on the right instead. i'll work for a 6x6 pic.

her right arm seem strange, the extra long folding line of her arm and her body, which makes her look impossibly skinny...

the rest of the issues more or less addressed by dennis.

just to add 1 more, dreamy feel, add a layer of softening. yours is too sharp to be dreamy.

- Are you refering to the greenish lines. If yes, those are her veins. Prolly need to PP that off. Didn't do any healing on the subject.Not sure about the JPEG compression thing

Noted.... she was quite active, coming out with all sort of pose. Ended up with messy hair. Anyway, understood on the hair issue.

Don't quite understand. Hair is already combed so can see the forehead.

Thanks for the tip on the framing and the addition softening. I'll remember this in the future.

There's also an abrupt fall-off in light levels from her face down to her body. Looks like 2/3 to a full f/stop difference.

I have a silver reflector on the subject's right side. Not very evident, I guess.

In this case, a reflector may not be useful as due to the hair and arm, there will still be shadows cast onto her cloths and neck area.

A flash with a softbox/ diffusser over the head with 3 panel silver/ gold/ white board placed in a wide 'U' shape below (Can ask her to hold the board - keep her occupied) would improve the potrait. :-}

To me, you got almost everything right except

1) If you had more of a lighting ratio, your shot would have been perfect.

2) If PS, try to cover up as much empty spaces as you possibly can like gaps in between hair.

Other than that, I might have moved the flash somewhere else to produce more of a lighting pattern.

In your case, it is where you placed your light source.
