Any recommendations for tripod?

I just got a tripod.

Trouble is, panning a video camera slowly while on the tripod is quite jerky because it takes a lot of effort to rotate the thing.

Should I go and oil the rotating mechanism or was it meant to be like that？

search for video head tripod and you may come across a lot of varieties. I am guessing you are not looking for a tripod but rather the head. Check to see if the head can be removed from current tripod.

if cannot then you either get a video tripod straight or a combination of tripod and head that suits your style.
