Queries on Photoshop - Opening of Raw files in Bridge CS3

Hi guys,

Need your advice. When I try to open the Raw file (.NEF, taken with a D300) for the first time in Bridge CS3, the photo, shown in the form of thumbnail, seems to "change". It seems to have some values adjusted, normally, it became darker and the white balance adjusted. How could this happened? Could Photoshop has a default setting and the all Raw file, prior to access, would be "adjusted" to this default setting. If so, could this process be eliminated. I prefer my photos as it is and process from that onwards.

I had a similar problem but so far no one posted any solution yet.

For mine even the colour tone changed.

What i do now is to open in Canon Digital photo professional

Hmmm, this sounds like a common scratch-head issue. I use Canon but I think this is pretty much similar.

Canon (Maybe Nikon too) has in-camera processing settings that allows you to adjust certain parameters for your photo to you liking such as Saturation, Sharpness, Colour tone etc. However, for these to be shown or appear correctly, 1) It has to be shot to JPEG where files are processed and 'flattened' so regardless of software used to open or display, it will appear as what it was shot from the camera. 2) If shot to RAW, it has to be openned in Digital Photo Professional software (Dunno what's Nikon's) because other RAW processing software will not recognise the in-camera processing settings and that will cause the software to render the photo as 'it is' - without in-camera processing, which is something I prefer as I will be doing post processing anyway.

To know if I'm right, try to leave such parameters to default or perhaps as '0' or some 'Neutral' settings. This way, not much in-camera processing will be done.

Thanks for the reply. I suppose it is the in-camera processing that I like, will save time on PP (only PP when necessary). I suppose, if I were to keep those settings (Nikon's Picture Control), I would have to use Capture NX instead of Photoshop. But sad to say, Capture NX is almost unusable as it is far too slow, even using it with a 4M Ram iMac. :sweat:
