Hi guys

I am looking for a micro hifi for playing music. It will be used to play things like Jazz, Vocals, new age and so on. I do not like too much distortion or too much artificially enhanced sound. I do appreciate metallic tweeters that are crisp. (not playing techno though.. :p)

1) Any recommended system?
2) Any shops we can go to (like MS colour , John3:16 equivalent?)
3) Any feedback of LG FB163?

One of my colleagues just spend around $500 for a micro hifi and said he was rather disappointed as a bit more can get a much better system with an AMP.

Thanks for any suggestions.....

there are some brands that make very good micro hifi around your budget.

Denon http://denonsingapore.com/ (DM33 or similiar models)

JVC http://www.jvc.com.sg/ (if still got the EX-A10)

Onkyo http://www.intl.onkyo.com/products/system_components/mini_systems/index.html

Yamaha http://www.yamaha.com.sg/675.html

do note that without a subwoofer some systems can come off sounding alittle lean or flat or both. but on the other hand most of these should do justice to the kind of music u listed. & do budget about $50 for speaker cables & another $100 for interconnects if the system has 2 seperate decks (cd, amp/tuner combo).

some of these can be found at Best (larger 1s). for others can try Audio House at Liang Court. i wun really recommend Adelphi as some shops not that pro customer.

for speaker cables, just glean some info from What*Hifi mag can liao.

Err, John and MS are photography shops... and Adelphi does not do mini compos...

You have a lot of requirements and expectation for very little money, I rather be frank with you, and suggest you increase your budget and get a seperates. Unless you need a tuner, a good CD player, amp (eg Marantz) and speakers can be had for < 1k.

Try KEC or Seng Heng at Adelphi, or City Electronics at SLS.

And yes we do have an audiophile thread here, so if you decide to 'upgrade' to a real stereo system, feel free to post there too
Cheers!

Instead of purchasing a Micro HiFi, I suggest the following setup which costs slightly over S$500 and offer so much better sound quality:

  • Acoustic Energy AEGO M satellite speakers (buy this used, or new from City Electronics at Sim Lim Square)
  • An used receiver amp (you can buy one for about S$250)
  • A DVD player (the S$79 Philips DVD player sold at Best Denki is actually quite good)
  • An existing MP3 player.

Hi

Thanks for all your recommendations. :)

I was looking for a reliable shop which sell at a lower price than Best Denki and thus mention on the MS Colour equivalent.

I do not want to move into seperate just yet as the main interest is still photography. Thus I am looking to buy a good "compact camera" in the audio world.

Anyone with a satisfied buy recently, do let me know.

Thanks.

I am using this in my studio.
MCM277_98-GAL-global

MODEL: Philips MCM-277

Sound quality quite good.

Costs S$199 at Best Denki.

If you want something decent yet doesnt cost a bomb to set up..for $200-ish can get

top up more for Aego and so on.

Really depends want to use for what.

just bring CD to the shops to audition. never listen, never know, i have auditioned mini compo system from those few brands in my prev post & am impressed with the quality of sound they produce for their price & size in a neat tiny package.

some may have more oomph, some excel in timing, some have a nice full bodied sound. if by any chance there are discontinued models on clearance & if the price is good, MTL!! ;p

the amp from my puny Denon DM10 at $800 years back is still working & sounds betta with age.

2)Try calling maximum credit and hong liang. They will give much better price IF they do carry what you are looking for.
3)Why FB163? cheapest I saw was $379.

Sounds OK lar. Better than those flat flat speakers type like what was mentioned earlier.....I like the bluetooth, USB recording and ipod dock. Now just wait for the right price to come....

Wahhhhh!!!!!! "Specially fined (errrh... poor grammar?) tuned by Mr. Mark Levinson" some more....

'High-end' mini-compo leh.

For a micro, this stuff is really good.

:Later,

ah, someone shares my view of Denon micro hifis.

they are 'bridge' systems, just like pro-sumer cams. not run-of-the-mill, not full fledged seperate system.

Does Bose Wave count as a micro hi-fi?

Bose Wave is :thumbsd:.

My Tivoli Music System sounds much better. Clear highs, deep smooth lows and warm vocals. Its tuner circuitry is based on mobile phone technology, so it is virtually distortion-free.

However at a price close to S$1,700 each, it is way beyond the TS' budget.

by class, yes. but the brands i've mentioned earlier will out-perform the Wave series by a comfortable margin.
