i'm not one who insure's my equipment. but i know of people who insure their camera equipment when they go overseas.

From what I enquire from my friend that there is no such coverage for camera bodies and lens.......

my friend went travelling to europe a few months back and his 400D got stolen. the good thing was that his camera equipment was insured so he got a sum of money back.

what insurance plan he buy to get it covered while overseas?

Hi,

Merry Christmas all!

I've been with an insurance firm for many years now - here's my take...

Insurance for this is typically part of home insurance that will cover only theft or fire (and you need to check if theft covers only forcible entry) - some policies can be more liberal in their definition.

Insurance for accidental damage is not available as far as I know - the risk to insurance companies is too high.

There may be some possibility to cover theft or robbery outside the home; however this does not cover negligence. Negligence can mean simply leaving your equipment unattended to not taking responsible measures to ensure it is not stolen.

As for travel insurance - travel policies usually only cover up to $500 for camera equipment. So one would be best advised to arrange for some specific personal coverage for your equipment than rely on travel insurance alone, especially if you own DSLR and nice L glass or expensive Nikkor lens.

Hope that helps a little...

There's hardly any insurance covering accidental damage. That would be card blance for abuse. Careless acting calls for monetary punishment :) - The only case that I know of is Courts, they offered an 'extended warranty" 3 years ago that also included accidental damages. But you only get it when purchasing the camera from them.
Secondly: the value of the equipment decreases fast, doesn't make sense to get any insurance. After one year you can get the same model for less money. But you pay insurance premium for your initial purchase value.
Setup your own insurance: put aside 100 bucks per month and if you bang your lens against some rocks you take the saved money. If you are careful enough you still have the money for other things, the money paid to insurance company is gone.
Theft is either covered in household insurance or travel insurance. Check the fine print for the details.

Do Courts sell Canon lens>?

the last I recall, there seemed to be an insurance arrangement at Nikonians where they covered international customers for camera insurance.

Might want to check it out.

Not trying to contradict you here.. I'm not sure how or why, but I think my school managed to get some accidental damage insurance for laptops (compulsory purchase via school). Even laptop LCD damage (lots of $$ to replace) is fully covered somehow.

I'm not one of those under this scheme so not sure who's the underwriter.

You can check... but AFAIK they only sell package kits. Maybe they have some kit lenses or the 70-300 as single lenses. Nothing that I consider worth insuring.

Stop being worried, take pictures :)
Such cases fall under personal liability. If he/she has such a private insurance then that's the point to get money from.

Well, from what I know, all for most warranty and repairs, they actually repair your camera with refurbished or reconditioned parts, not new working parts... its actually stated outright in the warranty card. So I find Warranty claims (in this case for accidental damage) rather mediocre, even if it covers. Well, its your take =) Imagine you smashed your glass and all they do is replace it with a hazed or marked one.
