Panasonic has agreed to buy Sanyo for ¥800 billion (S$13 billion) via a public tender offer. The main focus of the deal, Panasonic said, is the combination of the solar and lithium-ion battery businesses of the two companies, as well as a strengthened financial and business position.

Sanyo was started by the brother-in-law of the current Panasonic's chairman.

Well, merger of corporations and transfer of technology. Nothing really unusual.

If u'd checked, most of the large corporations in Japan and S. Korea are family owned. Don't really see any 'surprise' there.

In economic crisis, more merger/acquisation are seen as survival to move forward..

Hi,

Correct me if I am wrong, but from what I have been told, Sanyo manufacture a great number of P&S cameras.

These cameras are for various companies and are re-badged to them so to speak.

Cheers :)

So what's the new company name if any ? Sanpan ? Panyo ? Hahaha.... Hmmm..... :sweatsm:

Panasonic/National are much bigger brand names and so they will probably kill off Sanyo brand ...

Sanyo has been spending a lot of R & D on Green technology and probably Panasonic wants to jump start this division, which will be big in the future.

Does that means that time it would be called "Panasonic Eneloop Batteries"?

The own the company, brand and all the technology and patents that is or was Sanyo. It is really up to them to name it anything they want. They have no need to answer to anyone outside of their company.

Eneloop is such a success that this has become a powerful trademark-brand by itself .... even Sanyo do not usually call them Sanyo Eneloop batteries ...:bsmilie::sweatsm:

Eneloop is indeed successful. so much successful compared to their Recycko competitors. IMHO, its all branding lah. they may just have the edge because of they being the pioneers in such batteries technology.

Buy Sanyo being bought over by panasonic is a good idea... 2 giants merge to become a titan.

Another victim of the recession!

More to come?

Both companies make (or made) very good rice cookers. After the merger, there will be super advanced rice cookers from 'Sanasonic'.
