hihi, i'm having a problem with my kit lens. its quite bright out now and i'm trying to take a photo with my kit lens but the lens wont focus even when AF and IS is on. tried turning the IS off but still no movement from the lens.

also, when i try to depress the shutter to take the photo, in the viewfinder i see at the extreme right corner a 9 and a flashing dot. help help! this is causing me some amount of panic right now.

What distance is your subject from the camera? Have you tried removing the lens, cleaning the contacts then re-mounting the lens?

distance is reasonable, about 1m away. tried removing the lens to clean the contacts then remounting.
when i press half shutter the front focusing bit of the lens gives a soft squeaky sound, like its trying its best to move but it cant. but in MF i can move the lens freely. just AF problems.

tried taking photos with my 50 1.8 and its perfectly fine. just problem with the dumb kit lens. rarrrrr.

tried using on full Auto mode at further distance away.

haha 9 is the maximum number of shots you can take with continuous shoot. the flashing dot means it can't focus. a successful focus means the dot is not flashing. it sometimes happens with my kit lens too, try focusing on something else at the same distance first, then shooting your subject. Think it has something to do with the af not having enough contrast to focus on.

have you try to take a shot again now? are you shooting in a dark environment back then?

Do give it a try now and focus somewhere far with good lighting.

It seems like you are either shooting too near or too dark.

Seems like it's a lens problem.

yeah maybe.

tried. doesnt work still. just makes a pathetic 'try to focus' sound. once in awhile it will go out go in and attempt to focus but doesnt focus.

not really the case because anything else thats on the same plane as the object doesnt focus. even when i try to focus on something thats black next to white, wont focus. the lighting here is sufficient and the first time i tried (when i first posted the message), it was eveningish and i've taken many pictures at that time with no problem. :( so sad!
and anw if af has not enough contrast it will flash the light right?

wasnt shooting in a dark environment. it was during daytime. now even during nighttime when i try to focus near my wall light it still wont focus. and cannot be too near, because it still wont focus if i aim at the block opposite my house. :(

Bring it down to canon service center?

yeah i think no choice already. but is kit lens covered under warranty?
