how to D-I-Y a dry box for DSLR and lenses?

i knew abt lock lock box..many airtight boxes sold at shopping market nowadays..can share further your experience using own made airtight boxes as dry box for DSLR and lenses? how abt silica gel, RH meter? did you monitor the reading of RH?
I use Tupperware and loads of silica gel. I don't have a hygrometer to measure the humidity though.
Don't feel worry if inside Tupperware RH value is below recommended like 50-55? Don't feel worry if it is too dry without hygrometer monitoring? i am thinking to do like you too. But i think should punch a fit hole to put a hygrometer thru to measure RH consistently.
My dad has been using that way since before I was born and it's still working fine. But if a hygrometer gives you a piece of mind, then why not?

what relative humidity can thirsty hippo go down to by the way. I am still using silica which is said to be cancer causing... finding a replacement.

i recommend thirsty hippo instead of silica gel.
just change the hippo when it's full
Ah yes... I realized that they are better than silica gel too... Used that in my dry box together with the silica gel before I switched to a dry cabinet.

Am using thirsty hippo inside my dry box but am using the sachets kind, those that you hang in the closets.
Box comes with 4 sachets, about $5+. I put 2 sachets in the dry box, last about a month, my hygrometer shows 45-48 most of the time which is pretty idea humidity.
As the month past, you would see the hygrometer slowing shifting upwards, pretty much time to put in the 2 next sachets.

Its one of those i cases, free when U buy cameras or stuff like that.. My silica gel ran out, so just bought thirsty hippo, works fine & reasonably priced
Been using thirsty hippo (or similar products) for the longest time. For a 30x30x40cm box, the thirsty hippo would last 4 months and keep RH at about 40-45% depending on how often you shoot.
It works...just doesnt look that pro. But not to worry...no one would have to know. =p

too dry and say bye bye to the grease in your equipment.. see how smooth your zoom will be then ;p
Anyway, replacement of thirsty hippo and silica gel isn't cost effective in the long run since a small dry cabi only cost under $120 (less the electrical bills). Plus such a large DIY airtight box ain't cheap either :dunno:
Just spend once, and have some peace of mind instead..

some time people think differently, like if don't have to pay $120 now, whatever method is very cheap. don't like to think very far very long term.
