AVA recalls Irish pork products

LOCAL importer and retailers should recall all pork products from Ireland immediately, the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority (AVA) said in a statement on Sunday.

The AVA's recall comes shortly after the Irish government on Saturday recalled all domestically-produced pork products because of contamination with cancer-causing dioxin.

Laboratory results of animal feed and pork fat samples obtained on Saturday confirmed the presence of dioxins, it said, with toxins at 80-200 times the safe limits.

Dioxins are environmental contaminants that may be formed during combustion processes and may be present in industrial wastes. It is illegal for dioxins to be in food products.

'Following this announcement, and as a precautionary measure, AVA requires importers and retailers to recall all pork products from Ireland from the market immediately,' the AVA said.

Total import of pork and pork products from Ireland in the last three months was 516 tonnes, the statement said.

The AVA advises consumers who have bought pork products from Ireland to discard it and not consume the product. -- Additional information from REUTERS

oh no, ava induced price hikes for pork... but in today's context, what is safe to eat? organic stuff has worms, pests and larva. non organic has chemicals. sugar free stuff has deadly chemicals to substitute sugar, packed products has preservatives. home cooked food is full of chemicals and hormones altering technologies.

maybe we should just carring on eating and drinking and be merry. is there a savior to the problems?

Not every "news" gets to the news.

Lucky these effects are not immediate... not like a couple of highlighted China to Japan food poisoning cases.

See, when China had problem in tainted food supply, the world criticises.
They are quiet about Ireland.

I tink it's because China taints affected babies + infant death + kidney stone suffering.

As for Dioxins... care to check the dioxin level in BBQ/Grilled foods? :D

AFP report:

"... Dioxins are toxic chemicals that can have serious health effects, including causing cancers, if there is long-term exposure to them at high levels.

Food Safety Authority of Ireland deputy chief executive Alan Reilly said dioxin levels found in meat samples were between 80 and 200 times above the legal limit but stressed the risk to the public was "very, very low".

"You would have to be eating products containing these chemicals for 40 years before you would show any signs of illness," he said. "

In that case, can the Irish please eat all of the tainted pork since it is so safe to eat.

We should have our own pig farms.

If we have a vegetable plot, a pig farm and a rice field for every housing estate, we should be self-sufficient in food.

We also won't be afraid of starvation in case of war. :)

no such luxury for us in our land scarce country. can we explore underground farming? maybe bring back Kelong farming

probably for healthy ppl, it may take years for the posion to take effect, but for the not-so-healthy one?
