Newbie with Nikon D90

Hi all, just got my very 1st DSLR (Nikon D90) yesterday and been experimenting with it ever since. Got it from John 3:16 for SGD1850. Comes with a 18-55mm lens and a 55-200mm lens plus 8GB card and bag. Service is excellent.

Anyway, I'll be going to Halong Bay-Vietnam next month and was thinking if I should bring both lenses. Advice pls... Thanks..

know the area there first do you need to use the 55-200mm ,maybe suggest take 18-55 is good enough unless you planning take tele shoot :think:

hmm... y didn't u get the 18-105mm instead? then u wun have to decide which one to bring?

There's no overlap in the focal range, hence you'll need both lenses to cover up to 200mm. If you're taking mainly landscapes, etc, mount the 18-55mm. When you need close-ups, portraits, mount the 55-200mm.

sell them both.. for 500, top up 300 get a 18-200mm...then dun need to think...

Just bring the lenses you have. What's the point in buying lenses and then not using them?

People may say wide angle lenses are more useful. This is not true all the time, what if you want a picture of a bird? Here a telelens will be useful.

I got the setup as you from Jn 3:16. Like you said, the service was excellent!
I was at the shop contemplating for a long time between the package of 18-55/55-200 & 18-105.
Finally decided to go 18-55/55-200mm, reason being that I can have a telelen of 200mm instead of just 105mm.
Of course 18-105mm will be more convienient & don't have to change lens but personally i think i'm ok with changing lens.

Thanks for the advices. Wish that I have the budget to get more lenses.. haha... Still new to photography so was thinking of learning and experimenting with the kit lens for the time being.

Any advices on shooting halong bay's landscape? Most prob I'll bring both my lenses. still trying out the different settings for WB, Aperture, ISO and shuttle speed.

Hi ahkit, no specific advices since I have never been there, but u probably will need to familiarise yourself with the settings you mentioned, and practice taking a few landscape shots locally before applying it overseas.

Learning from a bad attempt locally beats learning from a bad attempt overseas!

Hi I just got my Nikon D90 as well from Sitex. Similary, i got the same lens as yours - 55m to 200mm, & 18mm to 55mm.

Hope you take nice photos back for us to see...

Hi all, me newbie to this forum and also just bought a D90 but straight away with a 18-200mm VR lens from Alan Photo. Used to own the D40 kit +55-200mm lens, but decided to just settle for the big range once and for all. Trying to sell off the D40 kit and passed the zoom to my bro. The D90 is rather complicated, maybe just hv to get use to all the new features, a whole new world altogether. Ya we should go for a photo shoot one day

I say bring both too. You got them for a reason and the trip sounds like a calling. 18-200 is good but 18-55 is so much sharper.

So a newbie will know what a D40, D90, and D3 feels like? huh??:dunno:

Anyway, back to the "equipment = photography standard" point...
Say I'm a total newbie to photography. I can only afford to spend $1K on a DSLR kit, but lucky me bought '6979' $5 small on Wednesday.
Today... I go through Nikon's website and Clubsnap, and hear so many people raving about Nikon D3, 14-24, 24-70, 70-200, SB900. So with the cheque from Singapore Pools, I can go out and buy ALL those tomorrow. But does that make me pro straight away? Of course the answer is no.
Some people just buy high-end cameras because they have excess $$. The world is unfair, yes. What to do?

OK. Went OT too far already.
Back to TS' question. I think you should bring along your 55-200 since it's quite small anyway. I'm sure there will be interesting boats, birds, rocks, etc in Halong Bay that you would want to capture. If you had 18-105 & 55-200 combo, maybe you wouldn't take out the long lens much. But 18-55 is a bit too short in my opinion.
