Hi all, would like to seek advice on a dslr setup that is suiteble for taking travel and landscape photographs with occasional portrait photos.

Thanks in advance.

Hi enderszonex for a start do you have any budget in mind ?

In short all the DSLRs makers have their range of lenses to capture what you need.

zoossh has posted a long writeup sticky thread for reading for more information

Hello...welcome.

Basically, all entry level DSLRs and prosumer cams from any brand is able to fulfill that. Maybe you want to do some research to see which cam is more comfortable to you cos you're the one using it. Also, you may want to check out the features, advantages and disadvantages of each brand.

buy 450d with kit lens very good camera

brand new somemore:) and you still have money left to buy tripod or drybox or 50mm 1.8II LENS;)

why don't you increase you budget to get d300? hehehe:D. D40 is a good camera to start but its limitation is the small variety of lenses which can be used with. its a light camera which able to produce good quality of image. if you can get dual lenses kit, it is better.

An entry level canon 400d or 450d with kit & 50mm f/1.8 will fulfill your purpose well within your budget. and there's still left over funds for a camera bag and tripod. :)

Nikon D40 body + Nikkor 18-200 VRII or sigma 18-200 OS HSM..

D40 abot $400++
Nikkor 18-200 about $800
Sigma 18-200 about $500..

all rough price from CS bns..

depends a lot if taking night shots and what kind of kit you intend to carry. Tripod is a definite must for those landscape pictures.

If more into spontaneous shots, a PnS might actually work better compared to DSLR if you are a beginner plus easy to carry here and there and all you need is a lite tripod, memory cards and batteries.

Don't forget the sony A200 and A300 and A350.

Thank you all for the reply. I was thinking of a 40D. Any comments ?

Far beyond your budget. Others have given already good advices for cameras within your budget. Keep in mind you'll need more than just the cam. Bag, tripod, cleaning set, memory cards, 2nd battery etc. to name a few things.

All those in the market are able to do these....

Just get a Fuji S5 pro. Currently the only DSLR that has the widest dynamic range, good for landscape. Also it has film stimulation mode which gives the best out of cam skin tone, good for portraits. Used to sell for USD 2.5k now only SGD1.2k. HAHHA and its weather sealed.. Poison.

less than that in uk.. if you have a friend coming back

especially since VAT has dropped. last i saw before VAT cut was 419 pounds. with current exchange rates.. :bsmilie::bsmilie:

Thanks for the recommendation for the S5 pro. was reading up a review of it on dpreview but i am not quite sure about the number of compatible lenses. anyone to further explain on it ? cos from what i found out i think canon has the widest range of compatible lenses.

The S5 Pro uses Nikon lenses.

And does it matter if a company has 1,000 compatible lenses if in the end you'll only use the 3-5 that all manufacturers have?

I'm a Pentax user. But I find fujifilm cams rather value for money. I'm personally looking for a 'bridge' fuji cam at this moment too when i don't want to bring my dslr around.
