thanks for the quick reply. my budget is between 1-1.5k. i dont mind getting second hand stuff from the garage too.

Basically, all entry level DSLRs and prosumer cams from any brand is able to fulfill that. Maybe you want to do some research to see which cam is more comfortable to you cos you're the one using it. Also, you may want to check out the features, advantages and disadvantages of each brand.
why don't you increase you budget to get d300? hehehe. D40 is a good camera to start but its limitation is the small variety of lenses which can be used with. its a light camera which able to produce good quality of image. if you can get dual lenses kit, it is better.

depends a lot if taking night shots and what kind of kit you intend to carry. Tripod is a definite must for those landscape pictures.
If more into spontaneous shots, a PnS might actually work better compared to DSLR if you are a beginner plus easy to carry here and there and all you need is a lite tripod, memory cards and batteries.

Far beyond your budget. Others have given already good advices for cameras within your budget. Keep in mind you'll need more than just the cam. Bag, tripod, cleaning set, memory cards, 2nd battery etc. to name a few things.
Just get a Fuji S5 pro. Currently the only DSLR that has the widest dynamic range, good for landscape. Also it has film stimulation mode which gives the best out of cam skin tone, good for portraits. Used to sell for USD 2.5k now only SGD1.2k. HAHHA and its weather sealed.. Poison.

Thanks for the recommendation for the S5 pro. was reading up a review of it on dpreview but i am not quite sure about the number of compatible lenses. anyone to further explain on it ? cos from what i found out i think canon has the widest range of compatible lenses.
The S5 Pro uses Nikon lenses.
And does it matter if a company has 1,000 compatible lenses if in the end you'll only use the 3-5 that all manufacturers have?
