hmm, looks more compact than the ray-flash.. but the design doesn't give that full donut-shaped catchlight..

This is nice, but it looks like an off cam cord has to be attached for it to work. I'd prefer it to be like the rayflash lol that way you have both hands free instead of one. But thats just me. :p

The problem with Rayflash is that a given model only works with a given camera.... the model for Canon's XXD model won't work with a Canon XXXD camera. Any upgrade, and you risk the Rayflash not able to fit.

hahaha..... and Rayflash isn't 'Cheap' too..... :bsmilie: But I do agree that using the Orbis Off Cam might be a problem.....

not to mention flash model as well! :bsmilie: lol, but my main point was the off cam problem.I'm sure it'll only be a matter of time where someone does a diy bracket for it.

Anyone know where i can get the rayflash and how much it would cost?
Thanks.

Price not sure, call them and check it out....

The Orbis isn't cheap either, retailing at a 169 USD. It's tempting though, I'll let our CS friends get some first to see if it's good.

Is it effective though? Does anyone go to the stage to 'swear by it?

I like to know if it can improve the picture results.

On the bright side, shipping is about 23 USD, so in total it should come up to 300 SGD or so. For at best a marginal improvement over other types of diffusers, and a huge increase in load. Still tempting.

Then we can MO !!:bsmilie:

Loooking thru their website at one of the "Orbis in use" photos .... it looks like they have industrailed something that Strobist people had began with as a DIY ringflash ...

Check out this link .... http://strobist.blogspot.com/2006/09/super-cheap-diy-ring-flash.html

Looking further into these ring flash attachments ... you also start to read more about loss of light intensity ... so if you have a low power flash ... the loss of light may be more than it is useful ....

Flickr has a wholw discussion here ...

do remember tt a weak ringflash output will cause redeye... which is why these budget ringflashes can only be used for leisure purposes and not in any attempts pro work

$467 w/o gst......

Hmm, its kind of disappointing that the obis does not give a full ring effect.....but some of the sample pics looks like a full ring...hmm

OT abit..... :embrass:

When I was thinking of getting myself Canon's MR 14EX Macrolite.... I was told that the Ringflash will only works with Canon's own Macro Lense.... there are a groove infornt of each lens where the Macrolite sits.

But one ClubSNAP-er did point out that Canon do sell an adapter that you could mount infornt of some other Non-Macro lens.... that would enable the Macrolite to be mounted on.... is that true ??? And what is the name/model number of this adapter ??

Was thinking of using the Macrolite on my EF 50mm f1.4 or lense like EF 85mm f1.8 :bsmilie:

Anyone got any idea whats the name/model number of the adapter..... or if it even available ??

This may be a specific issue with Canon ... but from what I understand all macro lights should be able to fit in front of the lens using the lens thread on the front of the lens ... like a filter ... By using a step-up or step-down adaptor ... you can fit it to varios size lenses ... (limited by the size of the flash).

I was thinking of getting one of these macro lights for portrait shoots ... but realised that the light spread was too narrow and would be difficult to cover even half body ... :embrass:

By the term ... "full ring effect" ... I believe they are talking about the catchlights in the eye ... not the overall effect ...

The overall effect looks quite good (base on sample pics) maybe on a close up of the eye ... you will not be able to see the round catchlights ... may look something like "brackets" ( ) type catchlights.

Not really good for close up,see d model eye .... Too harsh.

Mmmm.... are you saying that the Macrolite doesn't have as much 'Power' as a 580EX ?? or that the light produces doesn't 'Spread/Cover' as wide an area ??

I'm mostly using the 50mm f1.4 for protrait 'Headshot'..... but am worry if the Macrolite couldn't cover 'wider area' if needed.

Haven't tried it, but reviews say for portraiture it is underpowered if the distance is too large, ie not a closeup.

If there's an MO, I'll try the Orbis I guess.

The shape is indeed almost a full circle, with emphasis on the word almost lol. The guys at strobist say its a bitten bagel. Catch is you need 3 hands, I tried off-shoeing with the flash in my left hand and my wrists were breaking after a few shots.
