Just got my SMC Takumar 50mm F1.4 lens and was trying at the neighbourhood near the seller. Hope to capture a picture that is close to the hearts of those who lived during those days where such mailboxes are common. To many, Geylang might be a sleazy place. But to others, it is a place where opportunities to reminisce the old days are aplenty.

Ready to accept any advise on composition, cropping and exposure. Thanks!

To catchlights: I am sorry I missed out on the FAQ portion. Sincere apologies...

Critique Corner Post your image in here to get serious and honest feedback from fellow photographers. Please read FAQ before posting.

this line is just right above your image, not sure have you notice it?

I see nothing special in your picture except the shallow DOF

I agree. What do you want to emphasize? The shallow DOF? Then it's just a technical snapshot to showcase the capabilities of the lens. Geylang and "reminisce the old days"? Then it needs more context. Without the address the context of Geylang is gone, it could be everywhere.

the write up is for everyone to know about your intension of taking this photo, and so you will get feedback on the none technical stuffs.

anyway, back to the photos..

why use this mailbox your subject? cos have an address on it?
so from this photo, all I can tell the Geylang area is so dirty, noting about olden days, cos the aluminum mail box are very modern, not very old school. not weather beaten, just dirty.

a dirty mailbox.

Well, I thought the poster deserved a little bit more props. I love the DOF, I like the tone and the composition.

I agree that it is not impactful and won't stand on its own but it sure will make a good series of photos.

I thought the idea of relating to the "dirty laundry" and PRIVATE LIVES, about what secrets are concealed in the mailbox at the Geylang District with all the raids, murders, vice activities.

I wanted to emphasize that such mailboxes are no longer a common in our HDB context and also Geylang would be one of those few places where you still get to see them. Yes, I agree that with the address, it could be everywhere. Will take note of that in future shots.

Thanks!

:dunno:

erm.. i stay in a brand new flat and my mailbox is exactly the same.

in fact, i think this is the most common and current mailbox in SG.

because of this fact, it takes away the nostalgic feel of this photo.

like someone said... Its just a dirty mailbox.

that mail box is newer than most here in bukit batok. so dont feel nostalgic, just dirty.

Just a feel, don't quite feel anything from the photograph except a simple mailbox. Since you are staying there for quite awhile and your story is about Geylang, other than the fact that is well known red light district, what else you feel is worth telling the rest ?

Eg:
something that has been there since the start of geylang and still there ? Some well known shops that is still standing ? Some landmark that makes the elderly there feels good that it still exists ? etc.... :)
