Bukit Batok
took this on a sunset evening at tanah lot temple, bali.
i'm looking for fdbacks on the composition & colours of this picture.
i added the branch inside the picture to give an overall feel of distance & height. i am not sure whether it turns out to be more distraction tho.
my settings are:
Aperture, F/10
Exposure, 1/250 s
ISO, 100
Focal length, 20mm
Exposure compensation, -0.7EV
Camera: E410 + 14-54mm f2.8-3.5 lens
So pls C&C! this is my 1st try in critique corner. thanks!

the frame is more prominent than the subject - the temple's silhouette is too small and too dark and indistinct from the background: reminds me of the joke, big sh*t no chief.

Haha.thanks espion, will take note of the temple silhouette size.it makes sense!problem i often take the whole subject,in this case the temple and that's y it becomes small:)colours is ok?

Hi,
1- I guess that you have taken this pic in a larger resolution. Its good that you include the branches for the critique; so that you may wish to review after the comments given.
2- I agree with espion, and have cropped you pic to this; although I may have preferred the sun to be more on the left.

3- were you standing, sitting or using tripod?
4- what time was this taken? My guess is about 15min -45min before sunset? cos you could have waited a little while longer for the sun to reach the horizon.

ye!it does feel better with a bigger temple, i do have a few without the branch but the temple is still small (my composition problem), also dun really know how pple will feel with the branch:think:
with a crop minus the bottom left part, the sun will be more on the left.

this is with tripod with live view

abt 10min. yes i waited until dark, have a few closer to horizon but the colors not that good. took the pictures in RAW & jpg, so i guess can do some pp to enhance colors...this shot was done with sunset scene mode, others are in aperture mode. this is my 1st attempt at sunset, with the C&C i get, hope to improve next time:) thanks for fdbk

First of all good effort in being at the right place and the right time. However, being a photographer, you gotta be concerned in getting the 'right' composition as well. While there is no 'right' composition, my preference is this... to zoom closer to the sun and placing it at the top left third, while placing the temple at the lower right third.

Do give it a try!

BTW, my avatar was taken in Bali as well ;)

This is good example of rule of thirds. Thanks!

Hi wonglp,

I am a photographer who is not into the technicalities of photography and hence will comment on your photo's composition.

I feel that this photo is beautiful. This is especially so for the silhouette of the dark branches against the orange glow of the sunset. However, I feel that you might have gotten a better shot if you have waited a little longer for the sun to rise further. The dark structures at the bottom right of the photo is not well-shaped. A few buildings with jagged edges might beautify this shot further but of course, you can't control or change this.

Great shot, nevertheless!
