SINGAPORE: Some customers always opt for the exit row seats on flights because of the extra leg room.

From now on, these customers will be able to get guaranteed exit row seats on Singapore Airlines flights, but they will have to pay US$50 per sector for the privilege.

This is applicable for economy class bookings.

For example, customers going on a long-haul flight to San Francisco can end up paying US$100 more for a return flight.

Previously, exit row seats were only available on request, and subject to availability. Now, the new option offers a guarantee of assignment on a first-come-first-served basis.

However, not everyone will be eligible for such seats. Under mandatory safety requirements set by the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore, passengers who ask for exit row seats must meet certain requirements.

SIA says it may extend this Preferred Seat Selection programme to other seats that offer more leg room in future.

think not.....now knowing that it's chargeable....I do think that they will no longer offer that...because once u "request" for those seats..its as good as telling them to inform u "U need to pay $50 extra per continent/zone"...AKA Pay more

No you can no longer request for it FOC, the new rule is once you ask you pay. So it's either you dont ask and dont pay and or hope that you are the lucky one that gets the seat free or charge. Or maybe they will change the rule and put that seat as premium class economy seat.

Anyway it comes as no surprise. SIA is a airline that is more and more concerned with profits. Every airline is the same... it's money talks. Wait till they follow North West Airline's example and start charging for alcohol.

I wonder what will happen if there is no one willing to pay the extra .... ? So nobody sits at the emergency exit row .... ? The door suppose to activate by itself in case of emergencies .... ?

They will still assign the seat to someone if nobody is paying for it .... so i think you can still request ... but don't opt to pay ... and when you arrive at the counter ... just ask again if it is still available. :bsmilie:

That means I can get a nice exit row seat even if I am late and forget to request online. Lovely. $100 for the extra legroom on a longhaul flight? IMO, it's worth it.

If they charge $100 to put me next to a lovely lady on a flight (was on the same flight as a TV star recently actually) - priceless

not like UA, u have to pay abit extra for a section of economy plus seats for more room..

these are exit seats, the only good thing is that it has leg room. the bad thing, is u are responsible for that door in case of emergency.

THEY should pay us sitting there instead..

I think it's fair as these seats usually have more leg room...people will fight for it if it's FOC or on first come first serve basis....same like the aisle seat....On the other hand, if they are forced to pay...then they will subsidize the cost of the airline.....don't forget all of them are commercial entity for profit......so for those who willing to compromise....it's not fair for them to pay the same rate as those with premium seats :thumbsup:

Actually I hope our MRT and bus exercise the same thing, charge 2 dif fare for standing and seatting passenger....it just doesn't make sense for me to pay the same rate if I have to stand 40 minutes same like those who seated for the entire 40 minutes journey :lovegrin:

Once I asked the air stewardess whether I could have the exit row seat or not.

But she told me to be eligible for it my legs must be at least 3 and half feet long.

Maybe she likes men with long legs?

To sit beside the Exit Door is to standby in case of emergency, i will have to bear the responsibility of opening the Exit for the rest of the passengers to jump...

the exit row seats are very popular these days especially for long flights because of the legroom. i think it's nothing wrong to charge people extra - just like how ryanair/easyjet charges you for early boarding - you pay for what you want.

in fact, i htink the trend started from these budget air companies, they have been doing the same thing for quite a while now.

I think it is fair to charge for such seats! For health reasons, i always check in early to ensure that i get aisle seats. With the implementation,i might as well pay for those exit door seats than to check in early.
