Newbie in the house!!

Hi Ladies and Gentlemen,

i've just got myself a entry level 450D recently and can't wait to use it.
But other than the items i have on hand. (450D kit, SD cards and batteries)

What else is needed that i need to buy other than skills (need to hone) ??

Any Dry cabinet to recommend?
i believe i have lots of CD and 2 PnS that i can store in it too..

Hello...welcome.

Like what the others have mentioned. Most probably you would need a bag and dry cabinet first. Then get a tripod and slowly build your lens setup.

understand wat u shoot and wat lens u need to shoot them...else u will be the latest BBB virus victim! hahaha...u have the basic stuff to start already...just keep shooting!!!

bag is a must...dry cab too...the rest...quite optional...tripod if u shoot night scene, fireworks etc...external flash if u do alot of indoor stuff and so on...think thru before you buy...like my fiance say "photography is not a cheap hobby"

- cleaning kit
- uv filter (as lens protection)
- dry box with silica gel (cheaper than cabinet)
- extra batt (really useful!)

i got the canon bag as freebie.

oh yes..aHxi-o got some gd points there...cleaning kit...the blower n the brush at least...something u cannot do without...n lens cloth to wipe the accidental touch...

dry box or cabinet is debated many times over and u have to decide for urself...many threads on this already...

UV filter should be something that goes on the lens once u bought it...it goes a long way to protect that precious lens...

extra batt is optional to me as it depends on how long u go shooting everytime as each batt can take a good 2-300 shots...but i do agree it's useful as sometimes u may forget to charge the previous batt just as u leaving the house...or u shoot so many shots unexpectedly...which mean extra memory is crucial too...i have 3 batts and 3 memory cards...

where is a good place to get all the above items i mentioned?? i'm thinking of getting the dry cabinet cos i've got some precious CDs to keep too... hate those moulds man...

saw the promo on digihub i think... ad070 and ad080 seems good.. for the camera (my 450D, ixus 330 and 430 and the lens.. ) and my precious CDs...

i've got a canon bag thrown in too.. think it's good enough..

that's wat happen to many ppl...buy more and more stuff....esp lens...

i started off with a 28-300...now i got 4 lenses and 2 of them worth more than my cam body...

my total spending into this hobby is more than $5k (including stuff like tripod and so on) and it's still considered low already.

UV filter is sold in all camera shops and a normal one cost less than $30 (depending on brand and size) but good ones can cost $100 or more (B+W and so on...). Even Courts (Tampines one beside Ikea, not sure about other outlets) sells them, though limited to Tokina only and certain sizes only.

Cleaning kit should at least be blower and brush, and lens cloth (or tissue). Almost all camera shops should sell this too. About $20 for a set.

I know Carrefour sells the digicab and includes delivery for purchase of $150 and above. Sometimes during IT fairs you can get it too and they usually include delivery cos it's so hard to bring it home with the crowd and also cos they usually run out of ready stock real quick. Depending on the amount of things you have, you decide the size. I got a 60L one to put 2 bodies, 7 lenses, flash, grip, cassette tapes and whole stock of floppy disks (dunno y i still keep them when i have 3 thumb drives and only listen to mp3s nowadays). Heard that the running cost for it is $0.80 a month but I never went to verify this. But it's cheaper than having mould in lens...

Make yourself familiar first before you go and buy or go and shoot. Even such simple looking things like buying a UV filter need some basic knowledge. Otherwise you'll become an easy prey for sales man in various hops.
National Library was mentioned often as a good source for books to read up. The existing threads here and Google / Wikipedia are a good source of information, too. Read reviews, check the websites of other photographers and read what they recommend - but don't follow blindly. Your entry level camera with the kit lens is able to produce good pictures if you know how to handle it. It's the person behind the cam. The cam is just a tool, not the purpose

I got everything with my dslr, at MS color (amk hub).
All cam shops sell UV filters and cleaning kit, as both are quite common stuff.
Got both items at $10-odd each.

hahhs... I copied all my photos into an external harddisk. But i'm thinking of burning photos I like onto CDs in case of a HDD crash case.
