Shooting Hallowean

Hi everyone!

I am going to shoot a hallowean event in my school tonight from 7-10 pm. however, i'm quite concerned with the low light condition. i've tried shooting at night before but my pictures are either blurry or underexposed.

And i think flash is not encouraged in this event. so what can i do to deliver better images? does pumping up the iso helps?

Yea u can pump up the ISO bt noise would be a problem unless u are using high end cameras, check with the sch first if flash is allowed.

if flash is not allow than you use high ISO,
if noise of high ISO is an issue to you than use tripod,
if you use tripod, than you ask you subject to hold still,
if they can't hold still than you use big aperture lens,
if big aperture lens is too expensive, the you use normal aperture lens
if not enough light for normal aperture lens, then you ask the school to switch on more lights,
if they can't switch on more lights for you than you use flash.

I'm very much into low lights but not neon lights. Good advices are mentioned. Do turn up the ISO, depending on the cam, iso 800-1600 is ideal, big aperature. Too noisy? Just use noise ninja later on to kill it.
Ohya, and also you need really steady hands, shutter is going to get real slow. Don't know bout you but 1/2 1/4 1/30 1/60 I can handle, else shots will be blurred. Or ask them not to move so much!

I just shot a halloween party on wednesday, best if you can use flash...

Otherwise, pump up the ISO... After wide open aperture of course...

ask the school if they can sponsor certain lenses...

when you tell them the price, most of the time they will tell you to bring more batteries for the flash.

discouraged is not mean cannot

just shoot flash or high iso do whatever to get the shot

You are so going to get blury pics again this evening.
Why volunteer to shoot if you cant heck it. =( There is just going to be so much pressure for you to perform.

i cant speak for others but maybe TS should have ask if any mates here can give a hand as TS cant be everywhere at once. If got free meal and not too far away, i dont mind going to help. with 2-3 photographers no matter how inexperienced, should be able to get some nice ones.

hello! thanks for the advices everyone! and also especially the one quoted above. thanks alot!

it turn out that flash is allowed. but it's a little too harsh on the pictures. so i ended up trying to cover the flash (with:

1. my hand
2. serviette
3. paper bag

as a 'diffuser' to soften the flash. I didn't get good shots, but I tried! >'<

you are quite innovative about soften the flash, however, you can dial the flash compensation to cut down the flash output, to preserve more ambient light.
