would you get a step up ring for the hood of your choice?

Yes, and alter, modd or add-on ... whatever's necessary to make a hood effective.

MOST manufacturers' hoods are too conservatively designed - not really effective.

If you have the kit lens, and you don't like the hood, don't use a hood. The kit lens has a hood that's made to be used for 18mm on EF-S lenses for 58mm filter threads.

For the larger 77mm threads, there are alternatives. I bought my 17-40L which came with the 17mm petal hood for fullframe lenses which didn't work well on my 1.6crop. So I bought the efs17-55 hood and it works well now.

I like to zhng my hood. xD Black colour so ugly. I always stick stickers around it

how to zhng??!? my lens hood is those clip on to the kit lens... u mean they sell those lens hood can be screws to the filter thread...

I thought it was made clear to you - with the exception of a handful of lenses, almost all hoods do not mount on the filter thread.

What do you hope to achieve with the "better" lens hood anyway?

I see. Hmm... I've always thought that the original hoods were sufficient. Thanks.

If you are using crop sensor camera with a FF lenses, you can have a "longer hood" than the original hood. Because you are not shooting using the entire lens' surface area.
