Hi all,

I'm totally new to the DSLR hobby.

Basically i've narrowed down more or less the models i would like to own.

10D - used
400D - used
450D - new or used
1000D - new or used

Not taking into account whether its new or used, which will be the choice?

I noticed that the 10D has only 6.5mp while the rest(400D,450D and 1000D) are all 10mp and above. Does this make the 10D inferior compared with the rest?

Since Sitex is coming soon, i will probably go hunt ard for prices before heading down to Sitex, any shops to recommend?

Thanks in advance for any advises to come and i hope to join you guys in any gathering or outing once i'm proficient to use the DSLR soon.

Cheers!

OMTF;)

i will take either 400D, 450D or 1000D
but i still prefer either 450D or 1000D.

I prefer you get 450D... heard that 1000D wasn't that good.. =)) becos of buget wise, i can only afford 400D... so if you can afford, i thk you can consider 450D... =)

450D for me. :D

my advise is to get your cam from reputable retailers like CP, J 316, MS colour...... usually those fair will sell at Retail price with many not so useful freebies.

its not true... for 1000d, the picture quality is really solid even at high ISO...

but somehow the features are abit limited, when shooting in RAW.. that's about it, else 1000d and 450d share the same sensor and technology....

Continuous Shooting
For JPEG, its 3fps (1000d) vs 3.5 fps (450d)
For RAW, its 1.5fps (1000d) vs 3.5 fps(450d)

RAW Buffer
5 (1000d) vs 6 (450d)

LCD Size
2.5" (1000d) vs 3" (450d)

Resolution
10 Megapixel (1000d) vs 12 Megapixel (450d) this is not necessary a disadvantage.. haha.. considering both dSLR are same CMOS size sensor

Metering
450d has 1 additional spot metering, but the metering system on EOS is so solid that you dun even need that...

Autofocus Point
7 point (1000d) vs 9 point (450d)

see this table..

for me, i got 1000d at a solid price of $750... ;) how good can it get? 13 months warranty to go...

Agreed, tried out with kit lens today....wa pianz...pte ltd results. Luckily, I bought a 50mm 1.8, managed to try more with that.

Max Burst

In JPEG Mode
1000d - 514 shots
450d - 53 shots
400d - 27 shots

RAW Image Quality

Taking the seemingly identical JPEG engine out of the equation if anything gives the 1000D a slight edge in terms of sharpness. The smaller camera can't quite compete with the amount of detail shown in the fine horizontal lines on the medals, but renders the pastoral scene on the bottle just as well, if not better. The extra resolution of the 450D doesn't make a great deal of difference overall.

JPEG Image Quailty

You don't really need to be told that these cameras come from the same manufacturer - the color response is identical, as is the level of applied sharpening. The results aren't to everybody's tastes but, particularly for entry-level cameras, make a generally good balance between being bright and sharp without being day-glo or over-sharpened. These aren't JPEGs that will need a lot of work conducted out-of-camera. The difference in detail levels is incredibly slight, with the 450D making a slightly better attempt to resolve the fine horizontal lines on the middle gold medal.

Verdict: 1000d is a slightly toned-down version of 450d.. but in terms of image quality, it is as good, if not slightly better than 450d :bsmilie:

if you really serious, then go for 50d :D

haha.. me amatuer shooter, not really into events and speed... 1000d is good enough...

if you need speed, then its 5d... 6.5fps in RAW

one can get a used 30D for approximately $7-800 from the forum. It's better, at least for me, than all the 3 digit series. If you have a limited budget, go for the 400D. It's the best value. Don't buy the 1000D. You'll have a headache trying to sell it for decent price in the future.

btw, don't bother with the 10D. It is quickly becoming a relic.

i beg to differ, for 1000d... just buy a relatively new second hand would do... i got mine at $750, the 1st buyer did not register his warranty, nor did he go for the camera training... so essentially i am the 1st owner :bsmilie:

400D is not worth it imho.... if TS has the budget, go for a 2nd hand 450d, should cost u 900+

camera prices have been dropping alot... :sweatsm:

some of the second hand 400d prices are atrocious... asking for 700-800 for one which is still valid with warranty.. with that, i might as well go for 1000d which costs the same and is only like 1-2 months old.. :bsmilie:

there was a forumer who sold his 5 month old 450d for 900... ;p but then, he is a super heavy user... so i was not keen to buy it...

it all depends on u lah.. for people who blast 1000d, they are effectively blasting 450d.. they come with the same engine...

just that one is like WRX, the other is WRX STi... haha... aiya, if you dun depend on photography for ricebowl, and looking for creative ways to improve ur photography skills, upgrading from a proconsumer.... 1000d is more than sufficient.. my 2 cents.. :bsmilie:

for me, i will sell my 1000d for 600+ a few months before warranty ends :bsmilie:

You hit the mark precisely. The 400D has more value holding power because it is old AND good. The 1000D prices dropped $300 in a few months, the 400D prices probably fell about $50 in the same period of time. Always think of resale value when making a purchase and you won't lose too much money. Afterall, there's no true "value" in having a "newer" camera. If there is, go buy one straight from John 3:16. ;) I support them for their excellent service.

I haven't been watching the Canon prices for a long time since I've moved on to MF film. Perhaps you're right, maybe the price for the 1000D has stabilized :) That's when the 1000D owners feel the pinch. Heh, sorry if I seem too happy about it. I've been there and done that before. Thankfully I came out largely unscathed.

Oh yea... and at 700bucks, the 30D will outperform the 3 digit series. Don't tell me that the 30D is too old, people are paying 2k for the even older 5D ;)

and err regarding this
it all depends on u lah.. for people who blast 1000d, they are effectively blasting 450d.. they come with the same engine...

Say we have a pair of identical twins who went through the same uni and the same course. One got a first class honours, one came without honours. Do I employ the both of them at a same wage for running on the same genes? Nope. They perform differently and shouldn't be compared on the basis of what they're made of. Just like the 450D and the 1000D, else we wouldn't be paying a $200 premium for the 450D over the 1000D.

rent and try first.

how many megapixels depends on whether print 4R or larger. More is better when you need to PP by cropping useless background and enlarging the shot you want to size.

So the 30D is much better than the 450D?

I'm swaying towards the 450D actually...

:dunno:
