I knew a fellow forummer had a thread nearby, but since that was mainly to answer a question. Seeing how many folks here have combined hobbies, I'll just begin a thread on this :)

Firstly in case you don't know yet, there is a Hi Fi show this weekend:

Anyone care to share their setups, especially with pictures?

Pietertherock - A very impressive setup you have there. Sure Rocks.

Questions to clear some doubts which I have if you don't mind.

1. Why do most/all audiophiles remove the front grill cover?

2. Do you use your PS3 to view BD? If yes, are you able to get TrueHD, Digital HD via HDMI from the RXV-663? Looks like the audio output of the PS3 is only on Pro Logic.
If I use a Samsung BD P1500, I'm able to get TrueHD and Digital HD and it seems that audio from RCA is better than HDMI.

3. You're driving your front speakers with the Marantz SR 12 S1 from pre-amp output of the RXV-663. Your reasons?

4. What does PLII-X and Neo mean in the input selection? What difference/impact do they have from Pro Logic or Straight input selection?

Sorry for so many questions, but I think that I'm not fully utilizing the RXV 663.

BTW, I run a 7.1 setup with the RXV 663 with in-built power. For music a very old Rotel 6 channel Power Amp, bridged outputs for L&R to a pair of Richard Allen. Modest and good enough for me.

Thanks for your time.

1 - not all grilles are sonically transparent, taking them off may make the sound brighter OR I just did it to show off the speaker cones... :)

2 - please see this : http://www.xtremeplace.com/yabbse/index.php?topic=47321.0 for info on the PS 3, it does not bitstream lossless formats, but decodes it itself

3 - The RXV 663 has a basic amp section, the SR 12 is one of the most powerful and musical AV amps around (it costs more than 10 times more)

4 - see this: http://www.xtremeplace.com/yabbse/index.php?topic=48382.0

Thanks for prompt reply Peter.

2 - Yes that was what I was told when I spoke to PS3 tech support and also from information through internet search.

Your link at (4) leads to lots of answers and very informative.

Hey Pete

Thanks for sharing about the A/V show new venue.Actually was wondering why
no sound no picture for this year show.Usually every year at Le Meridien Orchard.
Price also increased maybe lesser exhibitors.

I am also into HiFi and Hometheater and setup as follows :

HT Gear : Old Onkyo A/V amp TDX-676
Forte 5ch HT Power Amp
Pioneer DVD Players - DV969,DV525
Sharp BD Player - HP20A

Music Gear : Classe CP35 Pre-amp
Classe CA100 Power Amp
Marantz CD17MKIII Player
Audio Note DAC 1x1 Signature

Speakers : Klipsch Reference Series RF 7 (Fronts)
Klipsch Reference Series RC25 (Centre)
Klipsch ReferenceSeries RW12 (Sub)
Klipsch Quintet Fronts (Surrounds)

Cables : Monster Cables whole system

At present watching BDs thru multi channel 5.1 hookup from the old Onkyo via
Sharp BD player's multi channel output. Will wait till prices drop further then upgrade
to latest 7.1. But to be honest what made me jumped in is the new audio format,Dolby Truhd
DTS HD Ma,lossless PCM.The formats are truely loosless as compared to the old Dolby Digital
and DTS format.:)

My setup now collection dust . hehehe:bsmilie:

Marantz 63 --> martin Pre Tube --> Sun Audio 2A3 --> Coral Flat 8

This will be an interesting thread, if everyone posts pictures of their setup...
Combining the hobbies of hi fi and photography.

Here is mine.

is that a electro static panel ...something like the maggie ?? Killer mid??

Look cool

These are now no longer in production. But the ribbon parts can still be made to order from Australia. They are not electrostatic in design. Yes, the midrange from these ribbon speakers are fantastic, very coherent and vivid...

My simple set up -
Marantz 63SE
Akai Tuner 2200
Sugden A21a
Coral Flat 8 (fullranger)
Belden speaker cables
Van Den Hul The First IC

I like jazz, vocals, blues, pop.

we have the same speaker ..and we may even have bought it from the same guy ( biggest supplier of coral FR in Singapore...hahahaha) ...if u know what i mean

Yeah I know what/who you mean!
I have a bass shy system, but the vocals are real sweet (to me)
If not for the recession, I would like to change my speakers now.

My setup:

CD: Blue Note Koala Tube
Amp: Leben CS 300 Integrated
Speaker: Totem Acoustic Arro (Floorstander)
Cables: Audience, AN (mixed), Shunyata
Power Distributor: Shunyata Guardian (old version)

Music Genre: Jazz, Pop, New Age, oldies, Rock

Pic of Leben (not mine but similar):

I have already stopped chasing hardware.
Only enjoying music now. :)
Will find time to shoot the setup.

Its not far from the truth, the mess is partly intentional to help prevent too much reflections

The curtains absorb light and high frequencies and the posters line all the walls
