Is a D90 worth it?

Hi all,

I have been very interested in photography for some time now. But I have always been limited to point and shoots and its lack of control. I decided that I want to pursue this interest of mine.

I have been reading the forums for quite sometime, along with other websites on photography. I am still learning and will continue to do so. After much reading, I am undecided between the D80 and D90.

It is a difference of SGD $500 between the 2 models. Budget is not a problem because I am saving up for it. Are the features (movie mode ... etc) really worth the $500 more?

I plan to get the kit + a dry cabinet to start off with before going into other accessories like lenses and flash. Of course, a bag and a tripod goes with it too. Anything else am I missing?

I would appreciate some advice for a newbie from fellow CS members.

i don't need the stuff like movie mode, but i would certainly appreciate the better noise control (is it better? i haven't gone to check cause i've no intention of getting the D90) i'm using a D80, and believe me the noise can really piss me off at times.

i had d90 and love every aspect of it. ust wish the d2x mode will be made available for it soon tho.

I'd do for the D90. Here are my condideration..

1. Expeed
2. Bigger LCD
3. Liveview
4. CMOS Sensor (D80 was CCD)
5. Larger Megapixel Count
6. Better performance at higher ISO.

Sorry, video is out for me as this is still a toy as compared to those video cam I operate. However that being said, the Video function is useful to take little snippets of my kid trying to snatch apples from his aunt.

IMHO, do not compare it to the Canon 50D with regards to noise at High ISO levels. They are simply 2 different cams for 2 diff markets. Nikon would be a good brand to start for beginners like you and me, as the controls are easy to learn and use. Until we progress and found limitation in the D90, new models would have came out. So well, just my 2 cents worth.

Yes, go for D90 if you can afford it.

Dry cabinet is a must. Can consider a gadget bag as well unless you have a free gift when you buy the d90 kit. Tripod and tripod head can buy later. Nonetheless, there will be many things that you'll find missing even after you have bought what you thought are missing. :devil:

Since budget ain't a concern, it's advisable to go for the D90 instead of the D80.

Coming from a point-and-shoot, like it or not, good or bad, the video mode is very much welcomed.

And the D90 comes with a better kits lens too. At least in my opinion.

For me the biggest advantage of the D90 is its ISO performance. Go to dpreview.com and check out the D90 review. ISO performance between D90 and D80 is a world of difference. :thumbsup:

It seems that the D90 is pretty much favored above the D80.

The CMOS sensor and better performance at high ISO resolutions seems to be the one that is attracting me the most. I think I am settled on this, I shall get the D90 in time to come, thanks for all your feedback guys.

It's all been broken down for you on your thread. Please go have a good elaborate read, go to the review sites and look through the features of each camera and try to make some sense of all that information.

Honestly, I think you are just confusing yourself, getting too caught up with the technological differences of each camera; that is why you dropped your initial camera system and you are now looking for a new system. Think about it. If, for instance, you pick the Canon 40D, and in the future Nikon comes out with another killer camera, would you switch? Let's say you do, and Canon comes out with another killer camera, would you switch AGAIN? It's a ridiculous, neverending cycle.

Do note that ISO is not a resolution; it's a sensitivity. Congrats on your purchase, in advance.

I would recommend the D90 as it uses the new EXPEED image processing which is much better than the previously unnamed image processor used in the D80.

Yes definitely the D90 can match up with the D300's high ISO performance and maybe even, bettering it.

Ok Let's end the never ending debate on the D90, 50D, 40D and D80 here. Right now.

D90 is clearly better than the 50D, 40D and the D80 in terms of high ISO performances.
50D is better than the D90, 40D and D80 in terms of "megapixel" but usually 15 and 12 won't make a difference.
D80 and 40D loses out in almost every certain aspects to theses two cameras.

Now its D90 Vs 50D
IMO, the D90 wins here, despite the 50D's high megapixel and ISO range however they don't perform just as well as the D90's high ISO performance. The D90 has the video mode as an extra convenience and certain selectable in camera edits which even gives you the fish eye effect. The D90 is also lighter but also has a build which feels just as solid as the 50D and further more, the cost of the 50D body I heard is at 1650 lowest, I repeat body only. D90 kit also 1650 lowest but for the kit. I may sound bias but you be the judge and decide for yourselves. But clearly the D90 is the better one to ME!

My apologies, I am clear on what ISO is in photography terms. Just that I thought it would be better to term it off as a sensitivity resolution.

Er...may I know where you get your information regarding the high ISO performance?

I am newbie also..still decide whether will get Canon 50D or Nikon D90.
But after read some comparison and comment..i think i will go for nikon D90.
By the way, all the senior here. do you know where can get the 'best price'
