Tripod as hand carry Luggage

I'll like to carry the tripod as a hand carry luggage rather than checked in.
I"ve heard some horror stories about how their expensive tripod got damaged when it was in their checked in luggage due to bad luggage handling.

In SIA, we're only allowed 2 hand carry luggage. If I already have 2 hand carry, can I carry the tripod in a tripod bag and SIA still allows it ? I'm hoping that they treat it like a jacket thing and not count towards as an extra hand carry.

In the US, how many hand carry luggages does the domestic airlines allow ?

this has been asked a lot of times. sia generally allows for tripod bags. so long as you don't carry too much, they allow it.'

tripods generally get damaged when they're OUTSIDE the luggage. if it is inside and you are using a reputable carrier, e.g. SIA, it shouldn't be so much of a problem. if it is naked outside, then they will throw it, hard impact might damage it.

as for the us question, go check the websites. the t&c will have what you need.

i usually put it in the luggage and check it in.

It seems that besides the airline's regulations, u have to contend with the airport/customs too.. I'm heading to Tokyo soon and I heard that I can hand carry it over, but coming back... Narita dun allow us to hand carry.

There's no confirmation on this though.. a lot depends on luck.

So far I never had problems bringing my tripod up the plane as hand luggage. In fact, the cabin crew will often help me store my tripod in the overhead compartment.

Flying from which airport???

Not much issue with the airlines but more often with the airport customs.....

Well, I've transit at Narita with my tripod before. My tripod almost couldnt be hand carried onto the flight as it exceeded their length limit of 60cm (if I remember correctly). I had to remove my tripod head to get it within the length limit.

Just my experience at Narita airport.

Would be interesting to see who starts attacking with a tripod :bsmilie: Should be pretty easy to subdue someone trying to whack with a tripod, esp in an enclosed area like plane

Haha someone even told me (in all seriousness) that barrels of the tripod's legs can be used to assemble guns, for the gun's barrel. Think too much James Bond movie liao.

Interesting question. I have the same worry too. I'm flying to NZ this Dec on SIA. I've heard people who said we can hand carry tripod and some say must check in or keep inside luggage. Most likely will carry a simple gadget bag like Lowepro Fastpac 200 for my camera and lens and then shoulder carry my manfrotto tripod with Optech strap - is it too much for handcarry?

when i went UK i tied it to the side of my haversack which was within the limits of hand carry size and I wasn't stopped.

yeah which airport is impt info.. cos they differ from time to time when policy change
