Why a pentax??

hi...i am very interested in pentax dslr(value for money with the features they packed inside the model)....
are the pentax lens cheaper than nikkor and canon???
I wants to learn more about photography but no burning my pocket..
I saw the canon EFS 18mm-200mm selling over 1 k....so just wonder are pentax lens cheaper as i have seen many nice pic with pentax dslr...)i have trust in them..
Canon are generally more expensive because they have a large enough market share to dictate it. People will be willing to pay a premium by the brand alone.
Pentax, on the other hand, as an underdog tends to be priced more value-for-money. In addition, because it has a built in stabilised CCD, you don't need to "buy" a separate stabilised motor for every lens you buy as is the case with Canon and Nikon. Because the stabilised lens market is a huge market with good margins, Canon is not willing to cut its cash cow. Instead, it has resorted to bundling a stablised lens in their entry level camera but this means you still need to buy the expensive stuff if you want stablisation for other focal lengths.
Pentax's strength is that instead of trying to trap you in a new format, all their lenses are mostly backward compatible with all k-mount cameras.
Also, Pentax's design prowess is in very light and compact lenses. Just look at their prime pancake range. They're so small!
Also, factor in that they have been churning out very good camers means that its really a Rebel Master Jedi in the Empire's universe.
Canon may have a larger lens catalogue but Pentax get by with really good lenses (especially their legendary wide angle lenses) range by minimising duplication of focal lengths.
Of course, I am not saying Pentax is strong in all areas but I do believe they offer very good value for enthusiasts.

The same question has been haunting me since the last 28 years.
Whenever the next guy on my left or right starts squeezing off their rapid firing Nikon & Canon while we're shared the same stage.
Unlike those 'Bigger' boys, Pentax doesn't offered users 'instant' successes where one can squeeze off 6 or more fps in order to secure a shot. Pentax 'force' you to be discipline & pay attention to the nature of your subject.
Not that I wouldn't want more from Pentax... In fact, I want more!!!
I want more FPS, I want faster & accurate AF, I want a better flash...etc I want more , more, more from Pentax but it just go Hold Hold Hold...
Above all said, I'm still with Pentax because my skill & know-how enable me to capture or produce what I want (hope I don't sound too Big-headed here) unlike many other non-Pentax users I know, who rarely can deliver when their cams are on single-shot mode, lens on MF mode. They will even freak-out when the preview screen is not working & I'm talking about my colleagues here.
Canon or Nikon or Pentax... used them all thru-out the film & digital years. Pentax is just... different... makes you work harder. The 'work' process is harder but sweet especially when you gain confidence in 1-shot-1-kill.

does that mean pentax has a higher learning curve for SLR beginner like me?
I have tried an old minolta SLR(film) and i was shock this old beast still produces very stunning pictures...
I am a beginner for SLR..one of the main reason for looking at pentax is because of the stabilise thingy was built inside the body(big plus for me)...unlike Canon or Nikon which is side the lens...i have to spend more if i need those in the lens.....
Does pentax fare well in the zoom section(Zoom Lens)....sometime need to zoom...althought will be taking mostly scenary pictures......

Being honest here, learning curves depends on one's input of effort. Banking on your discovery on the Minolta, its the images that 'stunned' you & at the end of the day, its still the images; the end product.
Pentax scores BIG here with fixing the 'shake' problem. While also having just 'enough' lenses of your choice. In my opinion, anything else that the Pentax line doesn't have (compared with the others...), probably you don't need it. But don't discount the 3rd parties offering too.
While the modern Pentax camera isn't designed for Sports or Action photography, the ability of getting the picture lies in the hand of the photographer... when you can proudly & loudly claim credit of.

thanks..actually i went to courts and they dont sell pentax at all...
any recommendation as to where i can feel the camera???
Alan Photo ,Cathay photo those usual gang?Notice pentax is not popular among those shop..i went in and see zero pentax but many nikon and canon
1) value for money (still is) - you get so much more bang for your buck. just look at the k200d. it's supposedly entry level, but you get weather sealing, excellent build quality, in body stabilisation. even for lenses, you pay a lot less for the amount of quality you get.
2) colors. good for landscapes (at least for me).
3) direction. less of trying to milk consumers. every recent update is SUBSTANTIAL. just compare k100d to k200d. k10d to k20d. you gain more than just a simple rebadging and fairy dusting to try to convince you to upgrade.

i gez we are comparing the pentax with the C and the N...how does it compare to the Olympus?
k200d against the e520..i understand that its 2 different systems..the oly being four thirds...

i have a certain admiration for olympus, i think they are not bad
the trouble is with the noise (i hope no olympians come in).. and the 2x crop factor. the 2x crop factor, and the fact that most third party lenses become significantly longer - for example my 10-20 is 15-30 on pentax. it will be 20-40 on olympus..
i am a primary landscape shooter, that 5mm difference can be very painful.
Cathay definitely sells Pentax cams + lenses.

You can also go to Orient Photo in Sim Lim, and there's another one in Sim Lim level 1, forget the shop name.
I guess you can also find it in Lucky Plaza.
One last thing, you may want to go to the Buy&Sell section at ClubSnap, see if you can get a bargain yourself!

can someone elaborate more on this?
i understand that primelenses have a fixed focal length and good low light ability...never tried one b4 actually...
