Hi all, i am new to this forums, hoping to seek some advice

I am a student and I am currently on an exchange program to the US for a year, Its the start of fall here and i would like to take some pics (I left my canon A70 back in singapore-good cam but after 3 ccd replacements, i donated it to my sis) so its a chance for me to invest in my 1st DSLR. I do know most of the basic photography concepts like, depth of field, shutter speeds, metering, etc.

so here is my prob, i got around $1300 USD as a budget. I could buy from amazon

1) Canon 450D with 17-55mm IS Kit lens + EF 50mm F1.8 + Tokina 11-16mm F2.8

OR

2) Nikon D90 Kit + AF-D 50mm F1.8 (going a little above budget)

So its basically between a better body (is it worth 2x the price?) or more lenses. Here are some considerations.

- I will be taking landscape, night scenery and some portrait/group photos

- I have a friend who runs a wedding/event photog company and they are using canon equipment, she is willing to take me on shoots and add me to her company if i am up to stuff. However she is worried that the 450D may not be up to the job, and is recommending a 40D/D90 (I prefered a D90 as i didnt need the extra ruggedness and shooting speed)

-Its abit hard for me to try out the cameras, Ritz camera near my area doesn't have the D90 in stock yet.

Hope to gain some opinions and insights..... Thanks for reading my long post!

only these two? i'd prefer the one with the WIDE lens. even tho i shoot nikon.

for doing weddings as an assistant photog, the first combi will suffice too.

yup like he said. Furthermore, you can use your friend's company canon equipment.

You can consider the D90 due to good iso noise control which might be vital during event shooting.

Huh, if your friend lets you use her high end equipment, it's really a boon to use Canon as well right?

buy 450D + some lens :D

going along with canon would be a good choice for your case.
perhaps 40d would do the trick.
sharing lens would help you understand your camera better and maybe in a faster way.

To TS,

I think 450D kit lens is 18-50 IS instead of 17-55.

In term of spec i think Nikon D90 is better than the Canon. FYI also, Nikon system have CLS.

Sharing lens is a good idea, but i think owning the lens is better as the lens is your own responsibility.

My vote, Nikon D90 (you will not need to give up the video function built-in Cam).

OOPS yes its a 18-55mm IS! Thanks for pointing out. CLS, Auto ISO, and Auto chromatic aberration correction and a nice LCD screen would be a reason why i would choose a D90 over a canon 40D if i am going to spend on a body at that price range. Movie would be a bonus, but i don't see myself using it that often.

Thanks!

Oh and a question that may be hard to answer.

For those who own a Nikon D300 or upgraded from a 12bit to 14bit camera, does editing 14 bit raw files over 12 bit raw files have any visible benefits to you in real life? Or its just a marketing gimmic that only manifests on test charts?

Once again thanks for your inputs and opinions!
