A good Monopod vs Bad monopod, any difference?

Just wondering, with all the debate on-going about light vs heavy tripod... Is there any implication for a monopod?

Also does anyone use a monopod that does not have a head? Screws directly into the camera and you can't pan it. I was thinking it might be easier and faster to set up.

Also, how light do you guys consider light? Is a 360g monopod (1.7m) light?

Absolutely... A cheap monopod could collapse/fold over if you put a decent camera with a heavy lens on it. A good monopod (stronger, not necessarily heavier) will withstand the weight better.

360g is ok... Not bad.

I don't think my camera is that heavy, I'm only using an FZ18 with TCON, probably about 800g? give or take 50g.

A strong monopod u can use it as a walking staff :bsmilie:

Pivoting about the monopod only, you can fix your camera onto the monopod direct without a ballhead/panhead, since the later might include unnecessary range of motion, unless you need them.

My Gitzo is about 400mg. And I love it for its light weight

my manfrotto 685b seem darn heavy thou... plus a head, more heavy...

400mg are you serious?! Thats almost the weight of paper. I assume you have a typo there.

I find pivoting clumsy sometimes, especially when theres a parapet infront of you or something. Havent actually tried it on a monopod though, only tried simulating how a monopod might feel with my current tripod.

400 gm not 400 mg

GM2540. Mine is without head. With load spec of 12kg, it is more than I will ever need.

Urs probably can put a much higher load.
