Hello,

Base on below pair, which would focus faster ?
Will it be significant enough to be noticeable ?

I am thinking if it make sense to move from D40 to D80/90,
as lenses seems to be much cheaper without the AFS/HSM.

Nikon D40 + Sigma 30mm F1.4
Nikon D80 + Nikon 50mm F1.4

Nikon D40 + Sigma 30mm F1.4
Nikon D80 + Nikon 50mm F1.4

what does it matter to you, whether it focuses faster? do you shoot sports? if you want fast focusing, get an AF-S lens.

either way, I think the difference in focusing time might be only a fraction of a second, eg. 1sec vs 1.7sec. Although it's a 70% difference, to me it's still not that noticeable or important. Unless shooting F1 cars or something ;) Then you need to BBB!!!

i like to shoot candid, so fast focusing will be an advantage.

For Nikon D40 + Sigma 30mm F1.4,
the focusing will be thru the lens HSM.

For Nikon D80 + Nikon 50mm F1.4 or F1.8,
it will be thru the body screw drive.

I was thinking whether to get the Sigma ($600) or Nikon ($200).
If the D40+Sigma combo can focus significantly faster,
then it might make sense to pay $400 more.
If the focusing is the same, then i am thinking to upgrade my D40 to D80/90.

tell you what,

why don't you go to a camera shop and test the lenses out yourself? ;) Thats the best way to determine focusing speed right?
