Hi All,

I am a newbie in DSLR and a proud owner of a EOS 450D kit which I just bought 2 days ago.. :bsmilie:

Some newbie questions, hope you guys can help me out with:

1. Its the battery sufficient for normal travelling use? Do I need an extra battery?

2. Any Dry Cabi to recommend? I will probably be trying luck at carrefour. Is a 36L enuff? I will probably be getting a 55-250mm later... ;p think I am infected with a mild BBB virus..

Battery can last 1-2 days on normal day, but advisable to get another battery either for backup usage or for combined usage with battery grip

For me, I have one spare.. This is very handy. If you only have one, then when it's charging, you can't be shooting.

My batteries last more than 1 day each, but I charge them at the end of the day (holiday tours).

You can get a compatible/3rd party battery. 1/4 the price of original.

1. When traveling, ensure you have more than one battery at any time. Another thing you should have would be extra memory cards. If it's a once in a lifetime trip, double the amount that you would normally bring, together with a spare camera and backup lenses.

2. At one point I was taking a deep look into the dry cabinets as well but basically ended up sticking to the dry box I had since day one. If you're going to get the BBB virus then get a larger dry cabi. Even if you're not, get a bigger one anyway so that it can house your larger lenses in the future.

Haha...i'm a new owner too! Bought mine 5days ago...haha...36L is small....try going to funan, John 3:16 at level 5, i bought a 50L cabinet...quite nice and big. Besides i have the 55-250mm lens....can put about 3 camera bodies inside a few lenses....with alot of room to spare.....for me i found 36L is small....can only put like 2 bodies plus a few lenses...haha...50L is a new model by the way....haha....comes with free foam pads which the 36L doesn't have and the 50L has trays that can be adjusted and moved..

Hmmm... Seems like a extra battery is rather essential. Hehehehe.. Coz I was under the impression that the camera can take like 400 shots per full charged, and I seldom took more than 400 at a time. Hehehe.. I think I will look for a one to be on the safe side. :bsmilie:

Oh Guys ! By the way, is it necessary to get a lens cover for each lens? Saw alot of those while I was getting my bag.. ;p

Lens cover always come with the lens itself do they?

Lenses generally come with the lens cover. Do you mean the lens hood? If you do, a lens hood would be good to block out lens flare; that is light that accidentally enters the lens.

1. It depends. If you're trigger happy, or if you're visiting a cold place, I would advise that you bring an additional battery. Cold places drain out the batteries faster. It is safer to get another 1.

2. Depends on the gear you have now and the gears you might be getting in the near future. My advise would be to buy 1 size bigger than what you're comfortable with.

Buy a good quality UV filter like B+W or Hoya's SHMC and you'll have a clear lens cap for each lens. No need to fumble with a lens cap, just pull the camera from your bag and shoot straight away!

2) Get a bigger Dry cab like 60L (for your future purchases... i see it coming)

3) Get a rugged camera bag like lowepro or crumpler

$168 for the 50L....friendly serivce and can be delievered within 2 days...but i seem to keep going there very often...Oh now...i'm struck with Buy, Buy & Buy virus...haha..

Since you have been infected by BBB:

1. Buy a battery grip! (at least an extra battery)
Note that battery runs out faster in cold places. IF you are traveling to mountains, etc. make sure you have battery grip or more extra batts.

2. Buy a good camera bag (like lowepro).

3. Buy a good dry cabinet (that has been discussed above).

4. Buy a good tripod (like manfrotto)

5. Buy a good memory card (alas, comex is just over!)
of course the higher the r/w speed the better on top of capacity.

6. Buy good lenses! Some good short and mid-range lenses (you will sure be dissatisfied with the kit lense, believe me!):

10-22mm f3.5
17-55 f2.8L IS
17-40 f4L
24-105L f4 or 24-70 f2.8L
70-200 f4/f2.8 (IS/non-IS)
50mm f1.4
Fish eye

7. Buy an external flash (like 430ex or higher model). You will need one for indoor shooting especially if the light is dim.

8. Buy good filters (circular polarizer, ND, star burst, IR, etc.)

Note that it is best to buy a good one or else, the image quality may be degraded by the filter.

9. Buy 1TB RAID storage to store your photo (it may be good to store in DVD but you know how slow it is to burn a DVD!)

10. Buy a remote controller for your camera. Besides it is useful for remote trigger, it is also useful when you are shooting in BULK mode (like when shooting stars or fireworks).

11. Buy mini studio equipment or light reflectors

12. Buy PhotoShop Premium for photo editing

13. Buy a good color photo printer

14. Join Canon PhotoMarathon in the coming 18-Oct-08

Thanks guys for your valuable information. Think I just grab a Dry cabi, invest in a good camera bag and get a macro lens for the time being. Hehehe..
