My wife had decided to get E520 at the recent Comex. She wanted to pick up photography as her new hobby as opposed to weekend shopping.

I am tasked to learn all the "chim chim" photography techniques / skills / tricks and then teach her. I am equally lost in the world of phoytography.

My very 1st stupid to ask:
What is filter for??? Must??? Recommendation??? Where??? Price???

Hoping some kind soul will answer to my queries.

Cheers.................................

LOL your wife is very good

haha she take up hobby but you must learn.

its not stupid to ask :) there are many kinds of filters, but the one that most "new" people get are UV filters. basically what most people use it for is to protect their lens' front element from scratches/direct contact with anything. Its not a must but its cheaper to get a $10 filter which got scratched replaced than the front element of your lens. ;) You can get it at any camera shop, but i recommend reputable shops like cathay photo (marina square/peninsular), alan photo (funan), John 3:16 (funan) or TK photo (shaw tower). A hoya UV filter costs $10. if you want info from a shop owner before you buy, go to John 3:16, the owner/his staff will gladly help you if you ask. :)

For most of the newbies,

I'd advise them to read this :

Photography Notes For Newbies

Very good to understand the terms better and how they co-relate

may i ask what's the point of ur wife picking up photography as a hobby?
it's as good as saying she wants to learn how to drive but ask u to go to the driving center for the class..

n i feel that photography is more "hands on" than "mouths on".

Basically, the most common filter is the UV filter. This kinda filter is used to protect the lens from scratches and dust particles (Do note that its cheaper to replace the filter than to replace the lens itself). As for prices, you need to call up the above shops to get a quotation as clubsnap does not have a compilation for filter prices.

Do note that some filters are somewhat more expensive than others. (eg. B+W filters & Hoya HMC, therefore when quoted do not be alarmed that you are ripped off). These filters are often favoured by other Clubsnappers. Do note that if you are not using a really expensive lens, it might not be worthwhile to get the above examples. In fact $10 UV filters still works.

that wat happen to a lot of us here... a big hold on our pocket

Learning together with ur loved one is much interesting than learning by onself ma. Can spice up the process even more :bsmilie:

Short of reading books ( and magazines ) there are many quality articles online including the posts on this forum. If online resources should should fail to address your queries or anything require further explanation, a post here should get u most of what you need.

And the best part, you got a FREE model... ;)

Keep shooting and practising...

Thanks to all whom had replied and make suggestion.

You people are really very helpful and informative.

My wife does her reading on photography and experimenting, she just wants me to learn so that I can concur / answer her doubts.

We take turns on the camera, who ever is not with the camera have to look after my 5yo daughter. This is why we did not buy 2 camera at the same time. Ha ha maybe leave room for "upgrades".

We surely go check out on those UV lens

;p
