Hi,

I got a canon 400d with 18-55 lense, wanted to buy a multipurpose lense like the 18-200 range.

Offer from the shop are as below.... but i don't know which one is better, as in the "Di", "DC" thingy freaks me out.....

Tamron AF 18-250 F3.5-6.3 XR Di II D for Canon @S$607.00

Tamron AF 18-200 F3-.5-6.3 XR Di II D for Canon @S$375.00 (why is this so cheap?)

Sigma 18-200 F3.5-6.3 DC OS @S$730.00

Thanks!

make sure check the optics and ask for full warranty..

take some sample shots. bring yr laptop to download even..if u KS..

i am using the 18-200, ok for that price..it is slightly slower in AF, optics ok..some distortion at wide end, tends to fine tune too much..

apart from that..

I was at MS just now asking about Sigma 18-200 F3.5-6.3 DC OS. The price is $799.

Yep, why is Tamron AF 18-200 F3-.5-6.3 XR Di II D so cheap?

kao why so cheap?

I thought I was the cheapest :bsmilie:. I found one 18-200 for $408. Amazingly, a see some people selling this lens 2nd hand for $450

Check the vendor websites to get the meaning.
Sigma 18-200: http://www.sigmaphoto.com/lenses/lenses_all_details.asp?id=3324&navigator=6
Tamron (both): http://www.tamron.com/lenses/prod/all_in_one_zooms.asp

Make sure to get the right reviews for the lenses, sometimes it's only a 2 letters difference between 2 versions of the lens.

thought canon 18-200IS on the way alrdy?

Hi thoo2! Am in a similar situation - using a 400D, looking at buying a all-in-one walkabout lens at the 18-200 range and a newbie :).

Been reading many reviews on cs and just read the fredmiranda one recommended by one of the bros here. The Sigma one with the OS has a rating of 8.2, the Tamron (18-200) one rates 7 while the 18-250 (IF) one rates 8.3. When i read the reviews, it was usually alternating between 1 good and 1 bad... some were raving about it while some users were so drastic that they claimed that they went to return the lens to the shop! But what i noticed was, most people said generally the same thing - "it's good..... blah blah ..... ..... for the price".

Reading reviews helps to make a better informed decision and i guess it also depends on personal expectations.... maybe, some who own korean cars are perfectly happy with the drive, feel, handling etc... others who are used to continental cars may think otherwise about quality, build, ride... others who are used to a certain brand might be somewhat biased in their choice as well.

With some of the information i've learnt from months of reading, i think i'll throw in a bit of my gut feel and jump in with the Sigma 18-200 (OS). ;p I guess if I should become an 'old bird" and 'out-grow' it at some point, i'm sure that there will be some new generation of newbies at cs who wouldnt mind buying it over.;)

Hope you make a choice that you're happy with!

Hi Phygee,

I'm new too and I want a 18-200mm for exactly the same reason. Are you getting a brand new one? Someone told me to get a second-hand lens so I won't lose out too much when I resell it (that is if I manage to). The IS version is coming out soon but I guess it must be quite expensive. I think I'll settle for a Sigma too.

Looks pretty compact. I am sure price will be a jaw dropper like the Nikon 18-200

Hi Denyce!

I think i've been quite a 'scrooge' so far cos everything of mine's 2nd hand :embrass: but were great buys found on this fantastic community! My 400D body was bought 2nd hand in May 08, then i recently bought a Canon 50mm f/1.8 and a 18-55 kit lens - both 2nd hand. The only new thing i bought was a lens pen. Thought i might give myself a 'treat' by buying a new lens for myself for once.

I havent really stepped into a camera shop but i guess it'll definately be one of the safer ones like Alan Photo or John 3:16, like most of the bros recommend.

My suggestion for TS is to wait awhile.
I remember there was a comparison of 18-200 between Nikon, Tamron and Sigma. Can't remember which site I read it from. Confirm not ken rockwell.

I also don't why the tamron 18-200 is that cheap. Btw tamron just announced 18-270mm. Maybe you consider it too.

Also canon introduced 18-200 IS. So here's another contender. Some person in CS converted the price of the lens from yen to sing dollar, and it's S$1000+?
But note, the canon 18-200mm has got no USM, and no distance meter. Just some of the cutbacks if you compare it against other lenses.

If I'm not wrong, the 18-270mm Tamron is launching in Japan end of this month

oh.. 18-270mm coming out... hmm... but already the tamron 18-250mm shooting at 250mm at low light is a prob... i dunno whether any improvement for the 270mm...
