Equipment : D80
Lens : 50mm / 1.8 or Kit Lens
Flash : SB800

Will be using M mode. ISO will be at 1600. Will be setting my shutter speed to 15.

If i use the flash, which setting should i set on the flash? Flash head pointing infront or upwards? What will be the setting for flash shutter speed?

Will the result be better if i don't use the flash?

Thanks!!:)

hahas... iso 1600?!?!? u planning to keep the pic for urself or need to pass it to friends/ office/ school?
the d80 does not have err.. put it that way not very good noise control, 1600 is way too high for the d80..
for urself its okay, but if u have to present it to someone esle its no way!

And the flash part, it depends on the concert itself...most of the time it does not allow..
and if they got different kind of lighting, try to not to use flash as it might clash with the colours...

It depends on what kind of concert it is. I take it that you're referring to a concert involving an ensemble (eg. band, orchestra, choir).

Don't use flash as it will distract the performers and is irritating for the audience when a flash light goes off every few seconds.

Limit your ISO to 800 or 1250 and with the aperture at F/4 see if you can keep the shutter speed at 1/20. A tripod is a much better choice than a flash light.

errrrr indoor concert, those idol singing concert? if so movement will be fast and r u infront of the stage or far away?

Manual mode, with iso 1600 and shutter speed at 1/15, my prediction is blur shots one after another

your subject is moving around for sure, and if u zoom to 135 on your kit the the blurness will be more. try to use faster shutter like 1/50-1/100 so that your idol is sharp and not blur

and your flash can simply shot forward with out diffuser if u are standing like 10-15m away direct flash from your flashgun should be ok. and D80 try not to use iso 1600, cos if your pic underexpose sure very noisy. try using auto iso in M mode

if you be using tele shots use around F4-5.6 if u want sharp picture

my 2 cents

All pics will pass it to my friend which she ask me to help her shoot. Movement will be fast and i will be standing infront of the stage. So if i don't use a flash & shoot in M mode using my 50mm / f1.8 lens, what will be the setting for that? ISO? WB? Shutter Speed? Thanks!

so u need a high shutter speed of at least 1/50- 1/100 to capture the action as previously said by nixontyl...
if there is low lighting , trying to use ur 50/1.8... cause i feel since u are so close to the stage, flash sort of spoilt the lighting.. like if they got dramatc lighting like different colours/ designs/spotlight and stuff...(u can check out my flicker for a musical i covered by what i say dramtic lighting..)
But after the event, flash is more or less a must for group shots la...
but if there if it just like normal stage lights then its fine la.. and one more thing if u wanna bounce the flash, must check out the height and shape of the celling first...
Setting wise u must really go there and adjust according and the lighting is different everywhere...
Try not to pump up iso.. around 800 is the max( i feel la)... unless u got those noise reduction software...

Just my 2 cents worth... :)

your question about the iso has been answered, don't go above 800 unless you absolutely must.

for WB we can't tell you, you have to go there and see for yourself. we don't know what the lighting conditions are like.

for shutter speed it HAS to be at least 1/50 or you'll get motion blur.

try not to fire your flash during the concert, its not polite to be firing away when people are trying to watch and performers are concentrating. if possible go close to the stage and shoot with your apeture wide open.

good luck :bsmilie:

hmm i haved used iso 1600 shots and printed to s8r. check out tas.xjavprod.com many of the shots there are by me on the nikon d80.

it depends on the colours/contrast in the shots. if you have dark areas (black clothing etc) then the noise tends to show up quite clearly. in the end its a matter of personal tolerance levels. haha

Regarding the WB, maybe you can shoot on RAW, and tweak the WB later.

1) Depends whether flash photography is allowed or not.
If yes, good for you and use your flash. But take note, flash sometimes can kill the beautiful colours from the lightings in the concert.

2) Shutter speed is more impt than anything else I think. Do whatever you can, keep it above 1/50 or 1/60s.

3) WB is not really an issue nowadays, you can pp and tweak it.

4) D80 doesnt really do a good job at high iso. Noise tends to be more significant in dark/black areas and on shadows(because they're dark). So if your subject is wearing some brightly coloured clothes, preferably of RGB colours, noise tends to 'hidden' and not so obvious.

5) I suggest you rely on 50 1.8 or get a faster lens, that is a reliable method than pumping up iso.

Bamboo (Filipino band) at SG, Clark Quay, The Arena. 31/08/08

40D: iso3200 (who says you need 50D or nikon FF to get clean high iso images?), f/2.8, 1/125s, no flash

Most of the concert doesnt allow flash. U dont need ISO 3200 on concert too.
I'll keep it short & simple. Shoot with the followings settings

ISO 800
Shutter speed 1/50 - 1/60
Apeture F4
WB solution = shoot RAW and adjust if not right.

Hope this helps. Cheers.

ask the organiser to use their brightest spotlight
fast lens
fast iso
faster shutter speed (unless you want the movement)

Bernard? errr i'm not bernard, if thats what you're asking. :bsmilie:

Dis wan yu don't ask organiser wan. Dis type of thing yu must form 'kang-tow' with the Technical/Lighting Dir, and lighting techs, or if that cannot jalan, then look for the Producer. :bsmilie::devil:
