Last Friday at Jalan Besar Stadium.

Security: Sir, no photo taking
Me: I did this before , why cant i?
Security: You are not allowed to take photos. Many people have complained.

I said to myself, Huh? Complain?

Security: If you want, you can go up the terrace or by the side of the field to shoot
Me: You mean I can go there?
Security: Yes, if you have a media pass
Me: But I dont.
Security: Then you cannot take pictures.
Me: Oh well then.........

So I placed my camera on my lap, and continue watching the game without having the intention to click any further. Few mins later, another security staff approached me.

Security: Hello, you need to keep your camera in the bag.
Me: Why? I am no longer shooting.
Security: You have to, else, we will get you out of the stadium.

WTH

All I could think of:

1. They reintroduce that Nor Alam Shah to this game after a year ban. So many securities were deployed unlike before. So whats so special about this guy to warrant such security?

2. Since when did S League ban photo taking from the spectator stands? Any bro can comment?

3. They were jealous of that big camera in the terrace? :bsmilie:

But boy, I am sure pissed!!!.......

I have self-imposed from taking any photos and going to any National events, govt buildings and also in shopping malls ..... i think all those organizers and security guards are very pathetic in their thinking ..... short of calling them idiots :dunno:

maybe one day if i ever meet our PM, will complain to him ....

I think it boils down to the black and white, demand a sign or a write up saying no photo taking? This has to be argued.

think they're jealous stupid security.

wrote to TNP..but no response...oh well.................

You are a "guest" in the property of the owner, the guards are working for the owner and any instructions passed on to you are most likely from the owner/management. You, as a guest, is it right for you to "Demand and Argue" with your host?

is it because of "copyright" or "image rights" issue?
sometimes these red tape does cause fans to have distaste and lose interest in the sport/league.

Did they state why?

I personally had a bad experience with basketball matches held at BAS indoor stadium, there was a local league going on, two matches side by side. No major media coverage, was there with my dslr (without flash...was shooting with basic kit set, no extra lens or flash).

I was stopped by a certain "high ranking" sports official, i asked nicely why i'm not allowed to take photos near court side. He said it's for safety reasons (which was ridiculous, the big score board seem to pose a bigger danger then i was), and later on he added/mumbled got copyright issues of some sort and demand i stop shooting. Lastly he raised his voice to ask me to leave the area i was stationed at (near the wall behind the hoop, at the corner). Very rude.

What image rights stuff? The only big poster i saw was the BM2000 shoes poster above the fans stand. I asked some of the referees (some whom are friends), they said they were ok with photographers as long as they do not disrupt the games with flashlights or go too near the court, and they mentioned "the guy" who told me off is "just like that".

I mean, here i am, a fan, supporting the sport, taking photos of the game, not disturbing anybody, not going extremely near the boundary line or disrupting the event. Might as well, make it a closed-door league, put the matches on tv instead. Implement security at the door, check bags and so on.

Needless to say, i stopped supporting the local league games because of such treatment, not to mention travelling distance involved. So much of their "efforts to promote interest in local games". Sigh

i think it shouldn't be "argued", rather he should ask WHY it isn't allowed. But IIRC photography is allowed in stadiums.

While I think it was not right for the security guard to stop you from shooting, they may have been instructed to do so.

:thumbsup: to you for keeping your cool and not spoilling the game for others should you start argueing with him. Still, it was an unncessary and stupid move on the part or whoever issue that instruction, given that photography at a football match is generally accepted.

The security only say, the public complain.

And when he said that? I told him, I did this before for a few times and he replied NO PHOTO!! So I told him, where are the sign prohibiting phototaking? They even checked my bags with camera and let me in. Again, NO PHOTO!!!!

That is the specific reason I did not argue. I am in their property.

But that WHY was met with a NO :(

in this case, its probably the security "official" being hard nosed and forbidding it even though he doesn't know why. Or perhaps he can't be bothered to explain it to you (which is not a good attitude on his part :thumbsd:)

or maybe he's a photographer too and he's jealous your gear is better than his :bsmilie:

But as YQT said, kudos to you for being so polite

Next time just don't go for these matches.

I think they've achieved their goal.

A very simple explanation would have easily satisfied everyone. Most of the time, all these misunderstanding and disagreement arise because people just order others around without even giving explanation.

In other words, people in the service sector has poor people skills.

Reminds me of an experiment before:
There's a long queue for the photocopy service. How do you jump ahead of the queue without people scolding you? Just explain why you need to go ahead of the queue. E.g. Having a bad stomache or something. It can be a simple reason, but people just want to know.

i would like to say our local security personel may not have said things with utmost tact with superior english. please bear in mind he was most likely (i can't be too sure either) carrying out orders from those above him. least 1 can do is request his superior to speak directly with u. often an order passed down the line gets distorted by individuals.

as for keeping the camera in bags, this is the same as airlines enforcing a ban on sharp objects. no intention of using it will not suffice. keeping the camera out of sight, from sercurity guards make them less accountable in the event pics were indeed found to have been taken by spectators.

the security guard is just doing his job. we never know wad penalties will he face in the event there is a slip-up. try taking 1 step back, maybe the security peps will do the same.

It is very interesting to find out, why it is possible to take picture in a hightly secure and sensitive area in Paya Lebar Airbase during RSAF Open House 2008. I saw some photographer with big 300mm white L lens ? RSAF staff at the entrance must had been given very specific instructions from the top on camera and video camera.

I know some museum do not allow camera, but they will provide you with a chair and indicate what type of "pen" you can use to draw on the paper.

The RSAF open house is different, they clear all sensitive equipment before the event, and restrict lenses to those below 500mm. (i heard it was changed from 300mm to 500mm)

Did you check if there is any rules on the ticket you have got that state Photography is not allowed? or is there any signs around the stadium which state that Photography is not allowed?

if not, write a letter to SSC and kick a big fuss about it! ;p
