No, expected availablility end September in Japan, October (or later) rest of the world. Great timing for Christmas shopping season if Canon can keep the shelves stocked.
Should be in S'pore within the next 2 mth.
More interested in know will the 5D replacement be out by Xmas 2008 :think:

Canon EOS 50D Image Quality
Everyone should know by now that increasing the number of pixels doesnt automatically mean better image quality. On a basic level, adding more pixels to the same size sensor means smaller pixels and more noise. To accommodate the 50% increase in pixels without compromising image quality, Canon has introduced new gapless microlenses for each pixel and a new four-step user-selectable noise reduction system. Over the past two years, improved noise reduction and increased light-sensitive area on individual pixels has meant improved image quality even while pixel counts have increased. The gapless microlenses sounds like another strategy for getting more direct light to the pixel. And 50% more pixels means noise will be effectively minimized in prints or Web images. The ISO 6400 and ISO 12800 high sensitivity settings are exciting but without seeing full-size samples theyre impossible to judge. However, its not likely that Canon would include them if they couldnt compete with Nikons high-sensitivity cameras. So well just have to wait and see if the image quality measures up. But over the past couple of years Ive been surprised at how image quality has improved even while pixel counts have gone up. So Im prepared to be impressed

I was about to buy 40D when i saw this diccusion.What do you think the price range will be for the body only?$1900 plus?

I heard from John3:16 that it'll be sold at S$1.6k - 1.7k
D3 and D700 sensors uses Gapless microlenses. And I'm guessing that if 4 stages of NR would to be activated, one would end up like D3's "plasticky" output.:think: Else noise might be worse.
Yes, but from the grapevine, it's more challenging to make gapless microlenses for APS-C sensors.
At this stage, I cannot care less about jpeg output and noise reduction effects on them.
I just wanna know if RAW performance is good. I am confident that Canon will have lightened the AA filter even more so that the pixel advantage really comes through. The only unknowns are low ISO dynamic range and high ISO noise. If the 50D is indeed 1 stop better, that puts it just slightly below the D3.
50D @ 15mp!than how about the old mk2 which falls @ 16mp n cost $16k when new!

now what, going to 1 series is it time to letgo n buy the XXD?the highe cost of the 1 series seems not justifiable.
1d mk3 only 10mp n this 50d is 15mp........lets see what the further test will come out with........
R most of the 1 series user going to jump to the 50d platform?being cheaper n higherpixel count.
what is canon doing to make a semi dslr so high n yet the 1series fall behind...eg,the 1d mk3

Dun think high resolution and ISO wins entirely for the mid range camera. There might be some kind of catch (like soft images at high ISO).
Canon protect their higher ends by having more superb Focusing system, features and power in their DSLR body.
Cant wait for a detail review comparing with the likes of D300, D700 with 50D!
