Thinking of getting a D80. Most likely using to take pictures of sch events. Can anyone recommend a lens suitable? Also recommend resources where i can read up (other than this great forum).

You bought D80 without the kit lens?

I presume you are not in photog, so u might need a flash and 70-200mm

the kit lens is extremely versatile, and should satisfy most of your day-to-day needs.

i find his site v informative, though not everyone will agree :bsmilie:.

Depends on the kind of events you wanna take.
But basically if you're new to photography the kit lens should be good enough for wide angles and "normal" shots.
However you might wanna get a telephoto for close ups.

Oh and of course, a flash too :bsmilie:

for events, minimum flash required is SB-600, follow by SB-800 and onwards like SB-900.
provided you got more cash to spare for the more advanced models.

I read on the forums that the kit lens is not very good. Cause if that the cas, i am afraid it will not be sufficient for events.(i.e Sports day and night outings)

well for stuff like sports day, i think the kit shld be pretty alright.
Night events depends what's the lighting like. A good flash might do the trick.
Else if really necesary get urself a 2.8 =P

"not v good" is a little vague.

the max aperture is a little slow, 3.5-5.6. however, it cost very little. a comparable zoom, constant 2.8 will cost u perhaps almost 10x as much.

but if u are referring to focus speed and enlargement (for sch magazines etc), my experience w the cannon kit lens is that it is a very competent piece of equipment.

use the kit lens and get yourself an external flash
maybe next would be a 70-300 VR
