When does warranty start?

A question from me.

When we purchase an lens from a shop and the warranty requires an online registration, does it mean that as long as we delay the registration, the warranty starts later?

I'm asking this because I see threads in the BnS where the seller states that "warranty is unfilled" etc... is there really such a loophole?

Generally, no. Warranty usually starts from the date of purchase. Sellers mention "unfilled warranty cards" etc to presumably mislead potential buyers, without opening themselves to the accusation of cheating.
 

hmm... i wonder why ppl at M*Color advice me to do my online registration few mths later after i buy my lense. if you have done an online registration before, they do not require your receipt no etc. unless for every lense the shop sells, they do a feedback to canon that this lense with this serial no is sold on which day which mth which yr....

i think a simple thinking will give you an answer...

You mean that it is the incentive of giving the customer a slight extension on their warranty so that they would buy from them then another shop that would chop your wrratny card and register it for you on the spot?

I doubt it.

From what I know (though not practice by all depending on how strict and what check & balance comes into enforcement by a product line company) and this is not just incamera shops segment but any retail shop taking goods as dealers representing various brands...Nikon, Canon, Sony, Panasonic..etc. It is about product consigment and rolling the money. The longer you take to register the product, the more time the shops has to settle payment with a company fot the goods they supply them to sell at their shop or store.

The digital way now of registering is not just for your conveinece by at the back end of the system, it is linked to the product company's database which keep tabs on product and product model. Once a product gets registered, the system can send an invoice to request payment to the shop you bought your product from.

They sell products by tens of piece if not hundred depending on how many stores...so no one is going to come down to every one to check on them...so they use warranty card as a means to check of course there will also be a limit time they willing to let you hold their stock or they will charge you but...between that period and now..you can roll your money.

Really small shops got no such opportunities lah. Really small shop have to pay for the goods upfront and sell to you...thus if they can't..they are stuck with it till it gets obselete and have to clear it at lower prices.

This is one likely reason for asking you to register your warranty later.

That was also what caused me to wonder, because there was one time which I delayed registration for a couple of days, and the warranty was dated on the day which I register.

Not too sure what is missing here..
 

i thought you must have proof of purchase (receipt) to claim warranty ? isn't it stated in the warranty card ??

sure you can input any date you like... but if you cannot show the receipt with that date.. then how.. ?? warranty void ?? can start to think how to explain when that happen... eg...type wrongly lah.... want to click cancel button but some how click the submit button lah....
 

I recently sent my lens for service at Nikon Service Centre...I think the so called tricks to by pass or extend the warranty are not advisable...

Service Centre required me to produce my receipt to show date of purchase...they will start the warranty from that date...

However, if receipt is not available...they will check with their records to see when the particular product is sent to the retailer...then they will consider that date instead...

I have never had any issues with Sony... I know people who bought their A700 in December 2007, and only registered it last week. They have warranty until November 2009, the normal 15 months. :)

It's a bit of a loophole,but also depends on the manufacturer. Also, they never ask for a receipt. If they do, just say "It's a gift from my mom/dad/whomever" and they usually don't argue.
 

I see.. thanks for correcting me... but now i'm really wondering how come the guys at m*color ask me to register at later date... (not that i doubt you guys' words...)

i usually dont register or even bother with the warranty card.i just bring the receipt to NSC.
i did forgot once n they asked where i got my cam n i just said i got mine from James of TK foto..
 

u know why all the companies want u to register ur warranty card?

THIS IS BECAUSE IT IS A FREAKING MARKETING SCAM BY THE COMPANY TO TAKE DOWN THE PARTICULARS OF THEIR CUSTOMERS. THIS DATA IS THEN USED BY THE MARKETING DEPARTMENT TO BETTER UNDERSTAND THEIR CUSTOMER TYPES.

unfilled warranty cards or registration all are bullcrap. all u need to do is die die die must keep the receipt. The receipt is king.

Register "at" later date not "with" later date, means you register later, 1 or 2 weeks?, so that you can exchanged if found something wrong, but the purchase date is the date on the receipt.

Nope. The only thing they care about is the date you register your camera on the MySony site. That's when the warranty starts.
