I wan to bring my Lowepro backpack for my coming trip on cathay pacific aircraft to HK.

But it seems there is tight limit on the size for cabin luggage:

"For all classes, each passenger (except an infant) can bring a free baggage allowance of one cabin bag not exceeding 56x36x23cm (22x14x9 in) in size. "

How do you guys carry your precious DSLR and lens onboard? Thanks

can i ask if I buy lenses in HK, when I bring back do I have to throw away all the boxes so that I wont get taxed?

just flatten it and put in your check-ins lor.
I don't think they will actually check.

i carried my rover plus aw onboard on air china to sichuan..no prob..
when coming back from sichuan (when our backpacks are too full), we ask the counter guy whether we can carried our tripod as well, the guy asked in chinese : photography tripod...
we immediately answer : yes yes ...to take sichuan lovely places...
we said YES NO PROBLEM..on the spot...:bsmilie:

I've brought my Lowepro Fastpack 350 on board SQ flights. No problems.

My HK colleague bought one lens for me when he came here for meeting. He just hand-carry the lens in the box.
If you buy more I don't know if they will check. If you have check-in luggage maybe you can dump the boxes in it while you hand-carry the lenses.

Woah, the dimension stated is already big enough for the Think Tank Photo Airport Addicted, the largest of their Airport series backpack.

Thanks.

if the the custom opened my checked-in bags and find the empty boxes, can I just say its for personal use and they will not tax me? or should i get the shop to give me a cheap cheap receipt with a false amount?

They only x-ray...

if u are traveling to touristy area, chances are the plane will be a big one. so, they wont be so niao on ur carryon luggage. UNless u travel in budget, or in domestic planes. Then they probably will ask you to check in, after you cross the bridge. But i will probably tell them is fragile, and request them to allow me put under my seat.

Never been kenna to open bag before. If u worry, as what Nisa suggested, flattened it, and put inbetween clothes.

Nothing much to worry ;)

Their checks are targeted only on certain size, certain shapes. The rest, they close both eyes.
