OMG!!! A new model just came out.

Panasonic’s Lumix DMC-LX3 With F2.0 24mm Ultra Wide Angle* LEICA DC VARIO-SUMMICRON Lens

Panasonic has today announced the Lumix DMC-LX3. The camera is aimed at DSLR users who are looking for a compact camera to complement their existing SLR gear. Consequently the LX3 comes with comprehensive manual controls and a fast F2.0-F2.8 24-60mm (35mm equivalent) Leica DC Vario-Summicron lens. Images are captured on a 1/1.63-inch CCD sensor sporting 10.1 million effective pixels. The Lumix DMC-LX3 will be available in the UK from August at £399.99.

if u use it as a streetshooter it will need to be as triggerhappy as u...
but will 2.0 give good bokeh? it's got a bigger CCD as well right?

I will wait for reviews as usual. The models might well be choice of a backup cam for a DSLR user like myself if,

(1) No barrel distortion and wide end. Otherwise the 24mm specification means nothing if you have to zoom out to 28mm for distortion to be gone.

(2) I doubt the small fraction increase in sensor size can allow me to shoot without flash with ease at minimum ISO800 like my DSLR not producing noticeable noise.

(3) I hope Panasonic can make standard sizes for their wide, telephoto and macro convertors and lens add-on so that all or most of their digicams are compatible. Convertors, adaptors, filters which can be re-use with a new purchase of a Panasonic cam means keeping a fraction of the die-hards in the camp.

(4) Movie mode - I like to be able to zoom in and out when recording movies.

(5) We want AA batteries in your cams. I don't mind if they are bigger or heavier.

(6) Improve in dynamic range. Many digicams out there spot the minimum 28mm, 27mm, 26mm and below specification but without a more powerful dynamic range capability i can never balance a deep blue sky above a shaded dark foreground and i don't fancy capturing a blue sky with any filters, not as yet.

for no.1, most wide angle will definitely have certain degree of distortion, some might be better controlled than others. but normally the wider it is, the harder it is to control.
for no.2, yes i believe the noise performance will not be that much of a improvement, but we might be able to see good iso400~800 images, but with the combination of a good f2 lens, it might just be possible to use in some dim lighting situation. as of 3, its pretty hard as they try to improve their lens design (going wider focal length or wider aperture)

AA batt is useless when it comes to temperate countries...
able to shoot a decent iso 800 shot is good enough already.

but first of all, got to give panasonic credit for sticking with 10mp and the slight increase of sensor size instead of trying to play catch-up with canon G-series.
