Which photography course to consider?

Dear all

I am intending to sign up for a basic photography course, and currently there are four institutions which I am considering:

1. Photographic Society of Singapore
2. Knowledge Bowl
3. Substation
4. Objectifs

Although I find Objectifs course description to be very enticing, it is also the most expensive out of the four. I am wondering if anyone has had any experiences in taking basic photography courses from these four places. Please do share with me your experience and also recommendations.

Personally, I would advise against (k, "against" sounds harsh) going for photography courses. Haha! There're LOTS of books you can borrow from the library, really. And if you don't like that, there are also lots of free eBooks available for download on the basics of photography.

I myself have never attended any courses in photography, and while I don't claim to be a guru or anything, I believe my photography has got at least some level of skill. All my knowledge in photography have been obtained via reading, and I believe too, that by reading through everything and understanding them, these knowledge will remain in your head far longer.

HOWEVER, I do believe that courses are useful. Haha! Because in the midst of teaching you the theory side of photography, courses give you step-by-step guidance along the way too!

In the end, it's up to you. Sorry for the whole lot of babble. Haha! For a stingy person like myself, I'd stick to my method. =)

Assuming you're new to photography due to the basic courses you're interested in, WELCOME TO THE WORLD OF PHOTOGRAPHY!!!

As i am a club member from SafraPhotoClub, taking up a course will be a good idea as you will know the basic of the camera and understanding of what is photography is all about..... but the most important ingredient in photography is PASSION in photography. :cheers:

IMHO there are countless top rated photographers who never attended a course in their live. They attended their own course.

Of course a course will help aplenty.

I think the course may help us much, at pass i only read books or website about photography, it only help to certain level, after that we still need to attend some course for further improvements. Through the course we will more understand. In the course they will explain in very practice way what is the basic of photograph and how it work.

Hello, just my two cents worth:

Knowledge Bowl: I attended one lesson by them (it was bundled with the purchase of the camera). Although short, they obviously know their stuff and it was quite enjoyable learning from them. It would have been great to grill them, but being a total beginner at that point in time, was not able to.

PSS: I am still taking from PSS and they are pretty good. The good thing about them is that they also have outdoor lessons where you can put the stuff you learnt to practise.

That being said, you should get your hands on all the books you can too. Oh, and practise too of course. Hope this helps.

I am strong advocator for education. IMHO a proper course with vital for proper and development for any skills. It will greatly accelerate your learning and there's always someone to correct you when you make a mistake.

Books and buddies are fine so long as you can understand them. But many a times, you cannot ask a book a question, you cannot show a book a pictures and get feeback. Your buddies themselves may only be half pail of water. I have know someone who shoots for 11 years and still stays in P mode.

Taking up a course will allows you the access of studio facilites, instant response for an inquistive mind. You will pick up things which you never know you needed to know but yet amazing useful during shoots.

I know I pick up something. Something as simple as the technique of changing lens. It takes less than a second for me to change lens when shooting and I am glad I took up the course. =)

Hi, there's another school you can consider called the Singapore School Of Photography. Think their courses are starting early August. Not sure why their website is still not up , but i did drop by their office at Toa Payoh before.

Any more info on them? Apparently they've been around for about 40 years, but have been mostly dormant. I visited their booth at that convention (PIX) at Suntec and even though they had impressive banners, I wasn't too convinced that they were for real?

I attend courses by PSS. I say they are good for learning the basics. Everybody needs to learn the basics first. Once that's done, you may then proceed to break the rules and create your own style. :thumbsup:

well, yup they've been dormant for quite awhile. But i think they're starting classes already lol I chanced upon one of the photographers who's going to be teaching there. Heard from em that classes are starting like next month or something. Only thing i'm not sure is why their website isn't up yet :what:

I've tought myself photography for almost 4mths before getting a camera, and by the time i had the general knowledge on photography and knew how to get a correct exposure/using filters...etc, and was using M mode all the while. What i did was to read up on photograpy online, borrow books/magazine from the library and if i had questions that i would like to clarify from the book i would seek guidance from friends, clubsnappers or even borrow more books to verify the source.

There are many books on photography which might give you a headache. I would recommend you to start off with basic technique books, then slowly advance to ametaur techniques books and then towards the type of photogrqaphy that you are interested in(portrait, landscapes, etc..), then to photo editing books.

IMO, course helps you to learn abit faster if you dun prefer to read up , but only if you dun mind spending the money. As someone had pointed out in the previous post, reading up online or various books will probably had you remember the techniques for a far longer period of time
