thinking of helping someone overseas with limited resource to set up a website for commercial purpose (not likely to have very heavy traffic) as well as to have put some pictures i have taken for them.

i do not have any web hosting knowledge but simple things i can still learn. but there is just so much information and i do not know where best to start. looking at some free web hosting and their own sites looks terrible. i saw many blogs who have clean layout, e.g. http://www.davidqonline.com/, but the problem is these websites seem to have a timeline, i.e. later updates get on the top while old information get pushed down, which is not what i want. i know i'm not giving a good idea but i just need some recommendations and examples, to see where i should register and try out.

would appreciate any help.

do pages lor
forever the front is the same, then link to other sections.

all u need is proper management.

check out wordpress or joomla

thanks. at least i can start to play around once i lock a few targets.

Wordpress is not bad. They have tons of design templates to choose from. And you can get a taste of how it works when you sign up for a free Wordpress blog.

The thing I don't like about Wordpress is, typing in bad code in the entries might somehow break the webpage.

Currently, I'm looking into Drupal. Somewhat similar to Wordpress but I feel its more robust.

get a reliable host, its not expensive. for a simple blog or showcase you dont need much space.

images can be linked in from photobucket etc.. so you dont have to worry abt storage that much

currently trying out wordpress and going to try drupal. yah, wordpress does seem to have some errors with spacing and "View" becomes "VIew" for some reason....

What kind of errors with spacing? I've been using Wordpress for all my blogs. ;p

If you need free web hosting, try here. But you would need to post to host, meaning meet a post count every month in the forums in order to continue hosting.

If you need help setting up Wordpress, I can help. But I'm no expert in it. :bsmilie:

tried drupal (downloaded a program but haven't install) and entering the contents online. seem to require html knowledge.

I believe Drupal is definitely not as user-friendly as Wordpress. For Wordpress, all it takes is to fill in details of your mySQL database, click a button, and you are done!

Not forgetting all the plugins you can install. :)

http://zoossh.wordpress.com/apple-view-paying-guest-house/

in between "Contacting Apple View Paying Guest House
If you wish to contact Apple View make an enquiry or a booking, please call Mr. Rabet Ram Thakur at 0091 1902 253899 from overseas or 01902 253899 from within India." and "The rates of accomodation at Apple View Paying Guest House", the space keep disappearing, and the two paragraphs get very closed together without the usual spacing between the bottom of a paragraph with the next heading. but i have solved it by adding a picture in between.

is a kwix host significantly different from the wordpress blogger? i'm now using wordpress and like the icons functions for simple things like bolding the heading and adding pictures and links, just like this forum. i'm linking to pictures in photobucket. if there is anything, i would prefer a better site that is similar to the forum and the wordpress with the icons to press for various functions, as wordpress seems to have limited functions. would be good if i can control the color and size of text.

and do u know how to make the site searchable on google and yahoo? i put the page published and uncheck the "Keep this page private" box, but google cannot find the page...

If you noticed. Wordpress.com IS different from Wordpress.org. Wordpress.com is a wordpress blog host, just like blogger.

KwiX-Host is a free web host, which provides you with web space for you to host anything you want. So you would be running YOUR own Wordpress. This way, you got way more cusomtization than Wordpress.com. You can install your own plugins, themes, configure your own settings. :) If you need a demo, PM me.

i will try first, but now stuck here with registration. which option of free hosting should i choose? the large the volume i ask for means i have to post more pages (if i keep editing the same page, that is still one post rite?) every month to sustain it? so if i got the 2.5GB bandwidth (larger bandwidth means more people in the world can look at the site at the same time?), means i have to add 5 new pages every month so that the account will still be valid?

Mmms. Try the freewebspace.net forums... More free hosting there.

Bandwith is the total traffic you have.

If you have a 20MB photo on your blog, if 100 people view that 20MB photo, you will have 2gb bandwith used.

but if my images are all linked to photobucket and is not from wordpress, guess it should be ok?

If you link like that, the loading of photos will be pretty fast. Photobucket's pretty fast!

Basically your site will load text only. Similar to how people post photos here.

Yup, requires some HTML. I like that because it gives the user full functionality. I've some web coding background so I'll choose Drupal. After helping my colleague work on a Wordpress blog recently affirms my decision. Sometimes when he post problematic code, the page will break.

For you, most probably just go for wordpress. It's simple and has all the functionality you need to post stuff. Just make sure to click the preview button always to check if anything is amiss.

Drupal, slightly more complicated relatively, has even more functionality on top of Wordpress, most of which probably you won't need.

but if my images are all linked to photobucket and is not from wordpress, guess it should be ok?

Then the use would be 0. Your BW usage will only be text:)

anyone know the setting to allow the words within to be searchable on google and stuff?
