I'm interested in photographing the outside of a building that's been designated as Protected.
I've looked up the Protected buildings Act and all it states is that photography is not allowed within the premise itself.

Am I legally allowed to photograph the space from outside of fencing which states PROTECTED PLACE ?

In a situation where a policeman tells me that I am not allowed to take a photograph from outside the space, what should I do?

remember what they said in NS? do what you want but don't get caught.
Legally if you're not supposed to be doing what you're doing and if the cops come and approach you, you have to cease and desist. push your luck at your own risk if you know what i mean.

There were many discussion about this, and I think one of the areas covered what you just asked.

You'll have to find out, from the authorities themselves, what exactly constitutes 'premises'. Very often, it may include a certain boundary area outside and surrounding the premises...even the public-access pavement open for any Tom, Dick and Sally to walk on at any time of night or day.

also jing going in line with this from what i've heard from many people is that even though u go thru the red tape to get official permission to shoot i've heard its almost impossible to get approval to do so because they rarely give permission for anything.

If you're quick enough to go 'Guerilla' style, get in place, BANG in less than 2-3 mins and get the heck outta there! Seen some GWCs and XMMs do it before.

yeap agree with dm best solution for doing what u wanna do. that or go solid snake.

Jing, i think i can help u on your this question...

Got one time one guy and his gal friend was up near the fence with the "protected place" logo, then the gal happily pose for the guy and the guy took quite a number of pictures. The protected place is army camp

Then the gal apparently lean on the fence and shaked it, and it activated the internal security alarm, then of course while they are shooting, they realise more and more ppl from inside looking at them, then after a while, police appeared behind them and ask them wat they are doing... then of course they say photography is not allowed etc. those bullcrap u know la.. but i dunno if they were asked to delete the pics, i cant remember..

Then another incident, I personally encountered, i was carrying a tripod and a big lens at seletar reservoir.. that area got one protected building, however beside that building there is a dense forest and i saw an eagle flying inside. So i happily set up my tripod and mount my lens. Then to my extreme left, i saw one security guard walk out from guard house and observe my every movement, then i glance back and look at him longer to see wat that guard wants, then after a while he shout to me "no photography of this building"...
but of course i say "okay" then i just continue pointing the cam into the forest and shoot the bird. then he also bochup me already..

So basically, u cant shoot...

haha yea.. from wad i know.. not allowed. many times i've seen nice photo worthy pics in my camp. but couldn't capture the moment cos no camera.

that aside, i've read in some article that the police were called cos of photography related incidents. so dun try.. :nono:

if you see a sign that says "no photography", don't try to be dumb and attempt to shoot the place/building. obtain clearance from the security officer / intelligence officer of that place/building if you want to continue shooting. approval will be given on a case by case basis, e.g if you and your camp mates just ORD-ed, i'm pretty sure your camp S2 officer will give you permission to take a group photo at the main gate of the camp.

I tried searching the http://statutes.agc.gov.sg/, but I didn't see any Protected buildings Act you mentioned. I've only able to find the PROTECTED AREAS AND PROTECTED PLACES ACT (CHAPTER 256).

That's what I meant

I think it's important to know what is allowed legally and what is not , rather than playing it safe all the time.
I'm not a photojournalist but if I were a photojournalist I would think that playing it too safe is just not in the blood
