...close up using the 18-55mm kit lens only?

Got this one just now, the insect stood still, perhaps waiting for me, but the lens wont focus if I try to get any closer.

Exposure: 0.033 sec (1/30)
Aperture: f/5.6
Focal Length: 55 mm
ISO Speed: 200
Exposure Bias: 0/6 EV

At the same time, I get this result too...

Exposure: 0.017 sec (1/60)
Aperture: f/5.6
Focal Length: 48 mm
ISO Speed: 450
Exposure Bias: 0/6 EV
ISO Speed: 450

check ur lens' minimum focusing distance. too near, focus goes nuts.

To use a prime or zoom for macro, can use close-up filter or extension tubes.

or reverse mount the lens.. can go up further than 1:1 magnification, have shot ants with a reversed 50 1.8 before..

...and then I took a few more practice shots, this time using Sigma 70 - 300mm lens.

If you not intend to invest too much $$$ at the current moment.

You can try reversing your 18-55mm kit lens, or get a close-up filter for yor 70-300mm.
