Why did Hurricane Narnis happened? [Global warming produce more storms & more volatile ones]

Why is there earthquake in China? [Ice cap is melting fast, gfalciers are melting fast and causing earthquakes]

These are consequences of man's activities on earth for the past 200,000 years. Global warming has accelerated due to CO2 release by man's acitivities. National Geography (NG)estimates that man will contribute the same CO2 to the environment in the next 50 years as compared to the total contributed in the past 200,000 years. NG estimates that the earth's temperature will be warmer by 6 degrees in 2100. That means if Singapore's highest temperature in June was previously 36 degrees, it could well reach 42 degree in 2100. NG's main worry is food; how do we produce more food to feed 9b people if temperture is so hot; corals reefs will wilt, forrests shrink, drought, floods, ice cap melts & sea levels rise.

HOW CAN WE HELP THE EARTH & SAVE IT FOR OUR FUTURE GENERATIONS?

By contributing less CO2 of course. One-third of CO2 released is from USA, One-third of CO2 released is from transportation, One-third of CO2 released is from rest of world. The following things we (as individuals) do will have the most impact in contributing less CO2 :

1. Switch to CNG cars, hybrids.

2. Use fuel efficient cars (cannot understand why people drive big vehicles in urban city at 60km/h)

3. Take MRT, not taxi

at this point (in local context) modernisation means more resources will be used to build new buildings.
on a smaller scale, shops changing hands every few months mean building materials are wasted.
individually, upgrading newer gadgets & the likes mean products did not serve its intended lifespan. but yet the demand for new products remain strong, eg. IT Fair receipts is proof.

next time when shopping, take a good look at the lighting used in-store. some small (no bigger than HDB 3-room b4 upgrade) shops have lightings that consumes 4KW/hr! :bigeyes:
 

this type of thread very few posts wan, most prefer to rant. from this can tell where earth is headed... :hung:

i've always heard this, but can you explain the mechanism behind it all? As in, how does global warming lead to more storms? And how ice caps melting lead to more earthquakes?
 

Wind,or hurricane usually due to the hot and cold current of ocean, the different in temp, so due to global warming, some become hotter or colder, thus more hurricane, and if it's hotter, the hurricane will be stronger also.

Land, have ice inside :D they call it frozen soil or something, when it melt then the earth easier to move and also the water in the earth may go down deeper or somewhere else. That's all i can remember, not very detail and accurate.

Yes, this is exactly how it works. The melting ice add billion of tons of weight to ocean, stressing the oceanic plates & causing plates to shift & collide and these cause the earthquakes.

Warmer temperature means more evaporation of sea water & this leads to bigger clouds & thus, heavier rainfalls; if these rains collide with large cold airstreams that come from faraway places, you have the making of storms. Most of these storms start in the sea & end there but occassionally one or two hit the shore like what happened in Burma.

Anyway, this thread is to share knowledge & spread the MESSAGE that we should all do our part to add as little CO2 as possible. And also to spread the message & educate others. As individuals in this fragile environment, we have to be more pro-active. Nowadays, world political leaders are just too soft & unable to lead the human race out of these impending 'mess'. If I were the US president for example, I will impose higher tax on fuel inefficient cars, of which they have 90% and give tax incentive on hybrid cars; and I will sign the Kyoto agreement that wants the countries to reduce CO2 emissions.

You got good point here regarding buildings; why do we build, then tear down, then build again (eg. en-bloc). Better to conserve the buildings.

Actually, whether we use more lighting or less will have little impact on CO2 release here in Singapore. So no need to worry too much about watching too much TV. All these power comes from the power plants, which in Singapore's case run on 'clean' natural gas vs the 'dirty' coal-fired plants in the US & China.

As individuals, our biggest contribution to CO2 release comes from our cars.
 

i thought CO2 is not the oni baddie? reduction of natural resources is oso harmful- defined as raw materials, livestock, primary forest, diversity of living species, & etc. some may not have a direct impac, but a far reaching indirect impact can be devastating as well.

In fact, what are the reasons we should reduce CO2? What should be the end result?
 

Whatever you do dont switch to hybrid cars, its just a marketing gimmick! 1/3rds may be released by the USA, but from total CO2 release animals contribute more than 70% of total emissions!

wow great speculation. any papers published on this causative effect of melting ice on earthquakes?

can TS educate us on how methane might be a more potent contributor as a green house gas.. and what should we do about it?

swim under water and ablate all archaeic bacteria that have been happily producing millions of tons of methane? burn all the rice fields? :p

big projects should be built with more foresight, to last several decades (at least 50yrs is ideal). afterall, so much resources went into building it.

emm, using more electricity means urban planners need more power plants to cope with an ever-increasing demand. modernisation drives up this demand, newer & more energy efficient gadgets only slowed the demand for energy- not reduce it.

building a new power plant means more CO2 is produced.

correct me if i am wrong on some points... :embrass:

Life on earth depends on energy from the sun. About 30 percent of the sunlight that beams toward Earth is deflected by the outer atmosphere and scattered back into space. The rest reaches the planet’s surface and is reflected upward again as a type of slow-moving energy called infrared radiation.
