Job Exp or Degree?

I've been in a contradiction for the past week.. hopefully I can get some insights and inputs here..

I've a choice to continue education and get a degree, vs going over to the US to be attached to a big company for working exp. The only problem is, I've eczema, which I guess will get worse in US during the dry weathers. Being in the design industry, a degree is just a piece of paper, what matters is my portfolio. So now I'm torn. Part of me wants to go over, part of me don't want people to worry bout me.

Perhaps u can go overseas get the job and look for chances to get a degree at the same time ? through part time studies or otherwise ?

The important thing is not whether others are worrying over you.
The point is simply this...... do you know what you want ?

A simple question but probably the hardest to answer.

I was previously in a similar situation as you.

I helped myself by getting to know what i want.
You must know where you want to get to, only then will you focus on the real question, how to get there.

get the work experience for sure. opportunities don't come all the time, the university will welcome you with open arms any time, and more so seeing you've got industry experience. (work exp helps with studies too)

both played a part, but u miss out one important thing " luck " when all heaven is for u.

i'd go for the exp..not too sure abt the design industry..

but where i come from..exp gets you hired..paper gets you paid...

Case in point - one of the guys working UNDER me..is paid more cos he's got a 2 diplomas and a degree and 1 year + work exp..i'm an ITE Grad but with 7 years work exp..so yeah..i'm his superior..but he gets paid more..

However, it is quite likely that you won't remain his superior for very long, if you company views paper qualifications as being immportant since they pay him more.

He will surpass you shortly and become your superior soon.

That's something new... what industry are u in?

i'm the performing arts industry..

while yeah..i might not remain his superior for long..but the fact remains that i know a whole load more then he does..and in this industry..somethings..you only learn when the **** hits the fan...i can teach him everything i know..but there are somethings that just can't be taught..and if he's going to be someone's superior in the near future..he has to know what to do cos when stuff happens, the crew is gonna come running to you for advice..

In Singapore, paperword (diplomas) count for more than solid job experience, especially when it comes to pay.

I agree with Vince123123 unless you have a very strong backing. There is no way to know what will be the next....

miss this boat, u might not able to get it next boat

u can study distance in USA.. if time allow

A degree opens up opportunities for you, it's not everything, but it will count at some point in your life, especially if you prefer to stay as an employee.

go to US! Study there.. my friend did it a yr ago n he is back in town, doing much better than b4. Opportunities dun come all the time. The uni is always there.. waiting for u

Well, years back, i was torn between having a degree and the opportunity of going to US. My choice then was to continue my studies cos i have seen many degree holders scolding diploma holders just becos they have the papers. And i don't want that to happen to me. So i gave up my job opportunity and went for my further studies. My choice then was to study in NTU. If given to choice again now i will still go for further studies but will never go for local University. Study life in singapore is practically dead. All the time is spend studying with little time left for ECAs. I would strongly encourage you to go for oversea university. i think you will have a better time there than in singapore.

I don't think I'll have time for that (nor allowed to do that). Especially when I'm in a foreign country..

Yea I do know a degree opens up opportunities, but working for a big company is like 'gold-plating' your resume as how one of my friend put it.
