Got a nikon fe2 from my uncle. However, the mirror locks up for quite sometime once i press the shutter. This cam does not have mirror lock up function. So i dont know why such a thing is happening. It comes down after a while. like 5 mins later?

Can anyone help? Or is anyone facing the same problem?

It is a jam caused by the mechanism at the base of the camera.
Nothing wrong with the mirror.
I have dealt with this before on my own. More difficult cases I go to my repairer, P&G at Peninsula Shopping Ctr.
Bring to repair shop. They can easily fix it for you for a reasonable fee.
Don't let any unscrupulous person or any other second hand shop tell you that your FE2 is hopeless beyond repair and better to sell it to them at a silly low price like say, $10.

it's uber easy to fix, just take out the bottom plate with a small crosshead screw driver.

Look for the big cog on the side where the forward lever is, then try to forward the film you'll see the cog being blocked by some other little lever like thing, just move that aside.

Once that is done it should forward properly. Attach back the bottom plate and continue on.

It's easy to fix but it's happened to me twice. And when you are out in the field or on a holiday you don't always have a tiny screw driver with you.

Quite irritating, and I don't know how I can go about preventing this from happening again.

Thanks both of you for your replies.

How did you fix it on your own? How much do P&G charge you? :)

Are you referring this solution for the winder or the mirror jam?

He is referring to winder jammed.

As for the root cause, It only means your uncle's camera lacks of exercise.
Grease on some of the moving parts dried up.

Whenever the mirror jams, does the shutter operates?
If yes, the mechanism below is not working properly.
The lever (with string) is stuck.

If the mirror just goes up with no shutter operation, then the shutter relay timer
needs some cleaning.

Usually can be done by accessing from the bottom cover. So I believe it should not be expensive.

It's not advisable to DIY if you're not familiar with the relay mechanism.
Adding oil could cause more problem if the oil leaks to the shutter blades.

True.
I made the mistake before.
Repairer told me and helped me clean it up.

Haha...i'm having the same problem now with my dad's FE2 also. But for mine, the mirror never came down... i did the backplate fix but to no avail.

Waiting for bro Fatigue to take a look. I guess no more film photography for me for this holz.
