Train commuters who cheat

I would say about 75% of the letters published in the hard-copy version of the ST are sent in by petty, stupid, whiny people. I think the ST is a piece of crap newspaper to begin with anyway.

As much as I would like to think that the ST editors are having a good laugh at these people who send in these stupid letters, and publishing these letters so that we can have a good laugh at them, I don't think the paper is intelligent enough to do that.

It's just a bad newspaper, period.

Look at it this way: this letter has sparked lots of debate here and elsewhere, and people waste their energy on petty items instead of maybe pondering some more important and less convenient questions. Mission accomplished.

Lol, if he wants to beat them, he can very well start at Pasir Ris, then go West to Tampines, change trains to East, then get a seat, then go back East to Pasir Ris, and start again.

It is a matter of see who wants to put more effort in getting what he wants. These type of people only green eyed when they are not able or willing to put the effort, and wants everyone to descend to his level.

Interesting. Never thought about it that way.

Yes I agree with that.

The seats are on the train for providing comfort. And according to some posts here, passengers who are seated should pay more? Then using that principle, everyone must be entitled a portion of the aircon vent since everyone pays the same (assuming same distance travelled)?

Haiz. There are more important things to work on, such as courtesy and hygiene when travelling in trains and buses. Such nitty gritty things don't contribute much to the overall welfare of Singaporeans la.

Typical kiasu Singaporeans?

No, but seriously, what is wrong? If you are taking the west bound train from tampiness to jurong east, the journey is very long. Standing the whole jounery is tiring. By taking to pasir ris then back, the commuter can get a seat. I do not think that this is consider as cheating the fare.

i wrote this to st recently, but not printed due to space constraint.

"I refer to letter of 12 May 2008 by Kathryn Lau of Transitlink.(the heading was 'Wrong fare deductions kept as low as possible')

I had made this observation while on my trips on our public buses.

When alighting, some commuters such as the elderly and student, tapped their ezlink card on the nearest most reader near the entrance door at the wrong time i.e. when it is still in the entry mode. This results in they being charged for a fresh trip again when only a single trip was made.

I have witnessed service captains reminding commuters to tap their cards again if they have failed to do so correctly. While it is understandable, are service captains equally enthusiastic when it comes to educating commuters in the above situation? Unfortunately, I did not detect such enthusiasm.

In this respect, what are Transitlink, bus operators and service captains doing with regards to educating commuters on the proper use of ez-link card?"

This mrt cheat article is the silliest thing I have heard yet.

I wonder what's the purpose of its publication?

The card readers at the entrance are entry/exit. You wouldn't be charged a 2nd time if you tap and exit from the front.

nah...this is not considered cheating. i wonder if that chap ever fall asleep and miss his stop before. and did he walk out the gates then tap his card and come in again or did he just cross the platform and take the train back the way he came?

I see your point, but do you suppose it's a system problem because it's an open concept and you only pay at the station counter.

Think of any train systems, you require a ticket from point A to point B and it's printed on your ticket. The conducter comes to check it and if you're headed in the wrong direction he gives you the boot. You probably have to purchase another ticket to get back to where you came from.

Think again of the bus system. For a bus service that plys both directions on a route it would be akin to getting on a bus headed in the opposite direction, taking it to the interchange so that you can get an empty bus headed back towards where you came from. Would you have had to pay extra then?

Same goes if you fall asleep on either example. The course of action plain and simple is that you would have to buy a ticket to get back to the stop you missed.

I'd like to believe the same form of payment is levied on the passenger taking the MRT, except perhaps due to it's design with the ticketing done at the station counters, people have started to take advantage of it. If these extra stops don't matter, why wouldn't they charge a flat rate for everyone?

You're right. Are they still searching for Mas Selamat? Guess he's no more in the woods huh?

I'm surprised that there are people getting bitter over things like these. If you're not pro-active in securing a seat, too bad.

Nobody's getting bitter. It's not a case of too bad if you can't get a seat. Just because many people do it and it's a widely accept practice doesn't make it automatically right. Heck even I do it too, and will probably do it if I'm tired.

Call me a hypocrite if you must, but I feel in principle it's cheating. You are in a sense exploiting a loophole in the unspoken agreement between you and the transport company when you purchase a ticket for point A to point B, but have taken a detour for your own gain, in this case to get an extra seat. Why else would they impose a time penalty for your travel if you stay in the network too long?

Hmmmm how can it be considered as cheating when you are paying for the extra time you spend in the network? I don't think it is considered as cheating and it is more the guy who wrote in didn't understand how the train fare system works and kicked up a fuss.

If there's a time penalty, then everything's balanced isn't it. Paying more to travel further for a seat is equitable, so is wasting your own time, so to speak.

Fair and dandy at the end of the day.

That's what I think as well. :)

that guy's probbaly a foreign import and thinks he is entitled to everything here! he is a loser.

The time penalty has a pretty big margin. Say half an hour to 45 minutes. Enough to take a few couple of extra stops. The transport company doesn't care if you want to waste your own time, what they do care is the amount of time you spend on the train, taking up load capacity that could otherwise be used for another passenger.

Taken from Straits Times online forum:

Wah, just because he cannot find a seat, condemn until like that?
So, if I take feeder bus service that loops around the estate considered the same?

Wah damn! Means if i take a leisurely ride from Jurong East to City Hall using the North-South Line instead of the usual East-West Line, does that mean I'm cheating also! Cause I take longer journey and more time also wat! :bsmilie:

Not only am I a cheater, I would be a retard too! :bsmilie:
