All lenses have a depth-of-field (d.o.f). Just a matter of whether they're short or long.
I guess you're asking whether you can achieve short depth of field with the D40X's kit lens 18-55mm f3.5-5.6, right?
I tried it with my dad's kit lens using various focal lengths at the largest possible aperture. The depth of field is not short enough to produce nice bokeh (blurring of background).
The 55-200mm f3.5-5.6 does a better job...
Or else must buy the 50mm f1.8 prime lens (no AF on your D40x) and shoot wide-open

Hi all,thanks.Which means that 50mm f1.8 will do a better job then my normal kit lens?
I tried using f3.5 but it makes no difference. & one thing is that i find that my pictures are rather pixelated though its a 10 meg cam. Any idea why ?
& many of my friends told me that D40x is not a good Dslr , is that so?

It gives you a thinner depth of field when you shoot it at its wider aperture.
Do post an example for us to see. Were you peeping at the pictures at 100%
I do not think it is true. It has not limited your shooting in anyway so far ?

The 50mm will give you a more shallow depth of field and maybe will also give a sharper picture - if you focus correctly. Having such a shallow DOF as the 50mm lens can provide it is also easy to miss the focus. You might want to use a single AF point instead of leaving it to the camera which AF point(s) to use.
Under which conditions you don't see any difference? What is the distance to the object?
Your "pixelating" might be the result of jpeg compression. Check the camera settings and adjust to highest possible jpeg quality.
Maybe you could post one of your shoots where you feel that DOF is not enough and to show the "pixelating".
Regarding your friends ... the answer is "It's about the person behind the cam." Can your friends tell the camera and lens by looking at the picture (not checking the exif!)?
Keep in mind that the maximum aperture of your lens will change according the focal length you use. At 50mm you will have the smallest aperture (higher f-number). Only at 18mm you will have the widest aperture of f/3.5.
Your max aperture size of f3.5 can only occur with a wide-angle shot (probably 18mm or close to it). As you zoom in, the aperture also closes down.
When you set your camera to A (aperture-priority) mode, YOU must set the aperture, and the camera will adjust the shutter speed according to the amount of light available.
Similarly, when you set your camera to S (shutter-priority) mode, you set the shutter speed, and the camera will adjust the aperture according to the available light.
and the D40 is NOT a lousy DSLR...

a 50mm at 1.8 will produce a shallower dof than your kit lens at the same focal length. your kit lens at 50mm will probably have a max size between 3.5 and say 4. depending on how far away the background is from your subject (i'm assuming your taking some portrait shots) will determine how 'blur' your back ground will be.
so if you know that you don't have the luxury of a very shallow dof, position your subject so that the background is a bit further away to achieve decent blurring to make your subject stand out more.
are the pics actually pixelated or they just look pixelated? don't trust your lcd screen, that's just for a quick review. what may look pixelated in your lcd may not be when viewed from your monitor. check the setting of your camera. being a 10mp camera means nothing. unless you set it to capture images at 10mp, it's a whateveryousetitat mp camera. i set mine at 4 - 6 mp, it's plenty enough for me.
the d40x is not a good dslr? it's one BAD a*s dslr
the pixelated thing on your lcd happens when you zoom in completely to pixel peep your pic while using your cam lcd.
upload to your com then view from the 17 inch lcd screen, and if you pixel peep again, same thing will happen.
