Hi forumers,

I am thinking of going to UNSW for post-grad studies under their international scholarship. However, i am very worried about cost of living near UNSW in sydney for a couple. becos i am bringing my wife along.

I hope to get some breakdown of details of cost of living. Do include a further residential area because if travelling to school would make rental cheaper, i would have to do it.

thanks for your help

It depends on what kind of accommodation you are after.
For a room, you will be looking at $150 upwards. Sometimes you can find gems below that price but you will have to look hard.
The best look at some of the real estates websites and get a rough idea first.

You can also rent a 2 bedroom unit and sublet the other room out to somebody else.

Foodwise in area near UNSW (Kensington/Kingsford), there are heaps of cheap and good food.
A meal per person will be around $7-15 depending on what you eat.
You can buy groceries in Kingsford and Randwick or even take bus to Eastgardens (huge shopping centre like Junction 8, Tampines Mall etc).

Personally, I would prefer to live in Kensington, quieter and in my opinion a safer place. (used to live there for 4 years).

If you need more help, pm me.:)

At least you get sponsorship. I am doing mine self funded with my family (wife and 2 young girls) in the UK now!

Gernerally, I think you shouldn't need to worry that much. If you shop like the locals, which you will after staying there for a short while, things become more affordable. Even in UK, some of the local stuff are about the same price as you would get in Singapore. Sometimes the supermarkets will have very cheap foodstuff too.

800AUD is already not much, given you still have 1k AUD to spend. How much do you actually want? save half the amount for when you come back? Just be prudent and don't waste money. You are going to be a matured student, you know?

Just concentrate on doing your modules and networking. You will find its worth more than the money spent.
