Pardon me for not adding humor or meaning to my still-life shots that many of you did for yours at a different level. my shots are of pure visual preference and well i do hope that one day i can grab the meaning behind still life photography, which i have to admit that i have completely no good idea what is meant by good still life photography.

#1 Plant illuminated by early afternoon sun.

#2 swissotel flag from reflection

deleted. under-standard

#3 see the unseen, is where i read from somewhere. that picture depicts the different texture of different layers of the road which is not immediately apparent. the picture below also has lines that draws across a car window screen, with the reflection of the sky on it.

#4 light through an old window

1st 3 pics are shot at f/2.8 at very fast shutter duration as it is bright.

clarity is due to lens used rather than due to setting. it is 80-200mm f/2.8 AF-D. no usm.

i am only able to achieve this:
DSC_0792.jpg

when i put f32 shutter speed 30 sec using myaf-s nikkor 55-200mm 1:4-5.6G ED even in the open with a f 5.6 and a fast shutter speed i get very dark image looks like i have to buy 50mm f1.8 lens right for more clarity

you can always increase exposure or to post enhance the picture if it is "dark". but saying so, i think i got what you mean and i think it has more to do with the nature of light (indoor vs outdoor) and the subject, in addition to the clarity of the lens, which in short is more about color reproduction rather than sharpness. retrospectively, i might just take away #2 and #4 which i think the colors ain't really great even for single tones.

as for the picture you post, i'm not sure why it appears so soft at f/5.6 which i would expect some degree of DOF. maybe it is got to do with the reflection of the metal can??

I like #3, but WB seem a bit too cool.

its at f32 btw and shutter speed of 30 sec lol

i would think abt diffraction but since both f/32 and f/5.6 looks like that, well, maybe it is due to the unfavourable lighting and white balance instead.

but anyway do try a 50mm f/1.8 or 1.4. lots of fun for still life. check this out, done with this lens.

I have to admit until your post and searching through the net then I come to understand what is still life photography. I would say this is a good definition, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Still_life_photography

#6

self-portrait in bathroom. saw my own silhouette and decided to take one in the backlit reflection. used my left hand to secure camera in vertical fashion holding against my face, to shoot the below.

failed macro for spider (literally chasing the spider) but some good colors though.

The bathroom shot is cool. Will never be able to do that in mine.

Artistic! Keep up the flair!
