China's one child policy and the aftermath of the earthquake

When i read about the 900 children still trapped beneath the rumble in Sichuan, China's one child policy set me thinking....

In the rural parts of china, couples are allowed to have 2 children whereas the urban folks are only permitted to have one child. For those who break the "one child policy" law, they will have to pay a hefty fine imposed by the government. However the fine is considered as "peanuts" to the rich and affluent so they will think nothing about having several children. Assuming that the majority of these trapped 900 children are from low income and middle class families, that mean they are an only child!! Which means this horrible earthquake will cause many parents to lose their one and only off spring!!! I don't know about you guys but when i saw the photos of crying, distressed mothers sitting next to their dead children/mothers who checked dead bodies after bodies hoping NOT to find their children underneath the white sheets, the images reduced me to tears. A picture tells a thousand words, just look at the anguish in their eyes.


May the rescue workers find the survivors and fresh corpses soon. Their families need a closure.

Losing a child is the most terrible thing that can hapen to a mother or father, more so than the other way around. Whether it is the ony child or not, I don't think it will make a difference for them, the horror and devastation is as bad.......

the policy came about in a time when some population control was needed. natural calamities can wipe out any number of offspring (or members of a given family) for that matter, wouldn't that be worse?

the speed of the respond team is commendable, unlike our other asian counterpart... :thumbsd:

i shudder to think if such event were to unfold here would our rescue workers & health care workers be overwhelmed... :sweat:

no country in this world deserves such a calamity, and if you have the audacity to say so, even on an internet forum, i wish you joy and luck in life - karma is a beautiful thing.

Huh? That's horrible. The calamity are other issues are separate. presume its due to the human rights stuff and everything.

Most people only criticise others for what they think is wrong, but if they are the ones doing it, they will fins all sorts of excuses why they are doing it.

Jokes aside, it is indeed commendable to execute such a massive rescue operation. No matter what, it will require huge resources to be able to return things to as normal. The news on the china quake is not as extensive as the ones on Myammar though.

i think China is rite about not accepting foreign rescue workers at the moment. their local army should be able to cover the ground 24/7 even in shifts. aid in kind like food, medicine, proper sanitation & temporary shelter would be much needed now.

looks like they really have their hands full, it'll take some time to restore & rebuild.

i don't really understand this hatred for foreigners in our country though. well, i certainly do not disagree that life is marginally harder with their presence for some's point of view, but come on, we are made of tougher stuff than that.

and no, it's not about tibet. it's about everything they can nitpick with chinese nationals in singapore. from prostitutes to foreign talent issues to any negative practice they can find. and it is happening in a very prominent local forums. and yes, i'm very disgusted. how do you think the general population of china will feel when they read such things?

Of course losing an offspring or a loved one is bad enough. What i am saying is isn't it worse to lose your one and only child? Anyway, this earthquake is horribly bad.

They will probably organise protect against the protester for saying such unfound "truth" about their beloved country. There are always two sides to the story. it depends on which side you stand on. Actually, the story is multi-faceted...:think:

demonisation of an entire country is nonetheless vastly irrational. even countries that have committed perceived gross atroucities - i.e. japan, germany - there have been people there who are still good. i do not deny that there was bad, but you cannot go all the way and say that they were all evil either. the world is in shades of grey, rather than black and white.

there are possibly cases when it is inevitable, i.e. world wars, etc.. you could not proceed with resolve otherwise. but china is a relatively benign country these coming years, if anything, i think the people making nonsensical comments fail to see that it's rise and proliferation will probably benefit us more. to just exercise hatred for the sake of hatred (and boredom, i suppose) to adhere to popularist trends.. is just plain retarded, in my view.

That's probably because the west is waning and the East is taking over...China being a superpower and all. Everyone has to protect their own interest.

Certainly, there are good and bad everywhere. Alot of it is just misunderstanding and not understanding or wanting to understand about other cultures, so misconception occurs.
