Hi all...

What will happen if i place an item that already has fungus into my dry cabinet with all my equipment? Advisable? Will the fungus spread to my new lens/camera?

Thanks 4 replies in advance!

I personally think that its not advisable. the fungus may grow faster (even if your humidity doesn't allow it to grow, it may just stay there and pollute your box?) It may not duplicate but it sure doesnt make the fungus go off and the air inside will contain the fungus?

I mean, if you were to store something expensive in a so-called unclean cabinet, would you feel safe?

Just my 2cents. Correct me if Im wrong.

thanks.

You would cause it to infect the items in there. I suggest cleaning the lens first, or leaving it in the sun for a long time, or buying a portable UV-C sterilization lamp and disinfecting the lens for a LONG time, and then use it on the inside of your dry cabinet. But even then i'd have the lens cleaned first.

The fungus may spread because fungus spreads by spores. Even if the condition inside the dry cabinet may not allow the spores to geminate, they may remain dormant until the next time you take out your equipment. So definitely not recommended.

No problemo.... have been doing so for past few years the healthy new lenses still ok until now....

With control low humidity, how the fungus can grow? Spores are everywhere, even in your dry cabi, it just can't grow inside coz of controlled humidity....

IMHO. Others may have different opinion.

I would not want more spores to coat the healthy lenses even though they are not going to be infected inside.

Not evidence based. But many of us would not be comfortable.

although putting them together does make it easier for the fungus to spread, please note that the spores are everywhere - you are breathing them in now. it's just a matter of where is a suitable place to breed.

My experience is my own evidence.....
